The Pokemon Company's partnership with the Van Gogh Museum has caused some problems, with the Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat promotional card being pulled from the exhibit as a result. Visitors of the museum caused chaos trying to get their hands on the limited Pokemon trading card.

The museum features a variety of Pokemon painted in memory of Vincent van Gogh's style. From September 28, 2023, to January 7, 2024, fans of both worlds can travel to Amsterdam to see pocket monsters like Snorlax and Sunflora while taking part in educational events and scavenger hunts. Visitors can even try their hand at drawing their very own Pikachu. At the completion of the tour, a promotional trading card featuring the Electric-type mouse mascot used to be given out to commemorate the time spent at the museum.

And that card would still be available at the exhibit if adult Pokemon fans didn't display such aggressive behavior. In a video shared to Twitter by deals_pokemon visitors are shown overwhelming a merchandise table, pushing and pulling at each other and artwork. The museum removed the Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat promo card citing the safety of its visitors and employees as the reason. All other related merchandise will be available online and in-store if they still have stock. The Pokemon Company apologized for quick sellouts.

Obtaining the elusive card without buying from scalpers will be possible for a quick few in the future. The official Pokemon Twitter account let trainers know that the Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat trading card will be available through Pokemon Center while supplies last, as anyone who buys more than $30 in PokemonTrading Card Game products will have a chance to catch one free card. Though a relaunch date for the card was not revealed, the account encouraged those looking to be notified on launch to follow the official email and social pages. The Van Gogh Museum website says this card will be available in early 2024 to participating retailers in the Netherlands, but not the museum.

Pikachu is seen throughout the many sets of trading cards, most recently appearing in the Generation 1 celebration called Pokemon TCG: Scarlet and Violet - 151. Other than being an artistic gem, the trading card can be used in the Pokemon TCG. The 85th promotional card features the typical Electric-typing along with 60 Health Points, one energy retreat cost, and a Fighting-type weakness. Its singular attack, Pika-Portrait, allows users to search their deck for a Pikachu card and put it on their bench. The competitive viability of this Pikachu is limited as it will not be able to evolve unless a new card is created that specifically lists Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat as a pre-evolution. Other cards such as Nest Ball and Ultra Ball can more easily search for a Pikachu or Pikachu ex without using an attack.

Collectors looking to get their hands on this special Pikachu will either have to wait for its relaunch or pay a minimum of $100 to scalpers. With only those 19 years of age or older having to pay just 20 euros to enter the museum, the secondary market is making a lot of money on a single card. This is not the only recent release seeing high demand, as the Pokemon TCG Classic set tripled in price on eBay. It is unclear if the card will be obtainable or playable in the Pokemon Trading Card Game Live.
