Highlights

  • Terapagos is a legendary Pokemon that represents the Terastal phenomenon and is part of a larger species that lived in the Paldea region millions of years ago.
  • The Pokemon Company's recent social media post seemingly confirms fan theories about Terapagos' origins and hibernation, including the notion that it is part of a larger species.
  • The revelations about Terapagos raise questions about its role in future Pokemon titles and the formation of the Great Crater of Paldea, leaving many unanswered questions in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Terapagos has remained one of the most mysterious creatures introduced in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, but a social media post from the Pokemon Company themselves provides some crucial lore details regarding the creature, seemingly confirming one popular theory among fans. As vital as Terapagos is within the world and story of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the games themselves did little to definitively explain the origins of the creature or why it hibernated within the deepest reaches of Area Zero.

Originally teased in the base game, Terapagos is a legendary Pokemon that was added to the game with the Indigo Disk DLC and represents the source of the Terastal phenomenon. Despite all of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's flaws, the Gen 9 games succeed in laying out a surprisingly layered story, with elements such as the mysterious Great Crater of Paldea, ancient legendary Pokemon born from cursed items, and time travel (or rather, the illusion of it) paving the way for a wealth of lore that adds a whole new layer of depth to the world of Pokemon as a whole. Unfortunately though, some of the story's greatest mysteries were barely touched on in the DLC, resulting in rampant fan speculation and a plethora of unanswered questions.

Pokemon: This New Terapagos Fan Theory Might Explain Where Paradox Pokemon Come From

A new Pokemon fan theory speculates that Terapagos is the key to understanding where Paradox Pokemon come from.

Though the insight Pokemon Scarlet and Violet provided into Terapagos was cryptic at best, an official tweet shared by the Pokemon Company succeeds where the games failed and drops some intriguing lore right into the hands of players. The post explains that Terapagos had survived a series of cataclysmic geological events which occurred millions of years ago, and seems to suggest that Terapagos is just one member of a larger species that once inhabited the Paldea region long ago. This has been a popular theory among fans for a while now, and while this speculation was based on details hinted at in the games themselves, it wasn't until this tweet that these hints were treated as fact.

What Terapagos' New Lore Could Mean for the Future

If Terapagos really is part of a larger species, then it would be one of the few legendary Pokemon that isn't just an individual entity. It would also carry some interesting implications and raise a few questions of its own, such as whether fans should expect to meet another Terapagos in a future Pokemon title somehow. Many fans had previously speculated that the Great Crater of Paldea was formed due to Terapagos falling from space similarly to Pokemon Sword and Shield's Eternatus, but this new information might suggest this not to be the case after all.

Though Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's mythical Pokemon Pecharunt similarly didn't get that much explanation from the games themselves, it also had its own official YouTube video detailing its origin story. Whatever the case may be, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet still leave a great many questions unanswered, and with the Gen 9 games seemingly wrapped up now, it's unclear whether these questions will ever truly be answered.
