Every Confirmed and Unconfirmed Plan For The Pokemon Franchise in 2024

New Games Announced on Pokemon Day 2024

One of the most likely outcomes for Pokemon Day 2024, which is set to happen on February 27, is that new games will be announced and revealed. The leading theory is that Pokemon will deliver both Johto and Unova games next, possibly as remakes or brand-new titles that explore these regions in the past and future, respectively, based on the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Paradox Pokemon. These include Paradox versions of the Legendary Beasts (Suicune, Raikou, and Entei) for Johto and the Swords of Justice (Virizion, Terrakion, and Cobalion).

Another possible option is for Pokemon Gen 5 remakes to be revealed, as they are next in line after Gen 4. This could also be a good way to bring to the Switch some Pokemon that have never been featured in any post-3DS game. Finally, there is the option of a Pokemon Legends: Arceus half-sequel or simply another game in the same style, making it a series. This title could take place in Unova or Johto to give those two specific regions some extra love, but any other region in the franchise would be a good pick. There is also a chance that games like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon get a new entry, but so far nothing has indicated otherwise.

2024 Pokemon World Championships and More VGC Content

The 2024 Pokemon World Championships will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii. The exact dates for this event have not been officially announced yet, but The Pokemon Company has a history of holding it between the second and the third week of August, which would mean any time between August 5 and August 18, 2024. The Pokemon World Championships typically comprise all the various competitive games from the franchise, encompassing VGC, TCG, and Pokemon GO. For VGC specifically, there will be several regionals and big tournaments leading to Worlds 2024, starting with the Portland regional on January 6 and 7.

2024 Epilogue for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and More Gen 9 Support

Currently, there is an epilogue planned for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet on January 11, which will seemingly wrap up the storyline of both DLCs - The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk. Based on datamines and leaks, the epilogue is likely to provide players with a chance to catch Gen 9's Mythical Pokemon, seemingly called Pecharunt. The epilogue is also said to feature around 1 hour's worth of content, between story beats, battles, and the chance to catch Pecharunt.

2024 is also likely to feature more Tera Raid events for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, possibly as soon as next week. On January 7, the Walking Wake and Iron Leaves Raids will end their third run, and it's likely that new ones will take their place on January 11 or shortly thereafter. Additional Gen 9 support could also come in the form of more Mass Outbreaks or even additional DLCs, although the latter is quite unlikely.

Support for Ongoing Games in 2024

Just like Gen 9 is getting more support in 2024, so are other Pokemon games. This includes:

  • Pokemon GO
  • Pokemon Sleep
  • Pokemon Unite
  • Pokemon Masters EX

This continued support will likely include multiple in-game events, bonuses, and exclusive content for players to engage with. For example, Pokemon GO fans can catch Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus in January 2024. Similarly, Pokemon Unite is introducing Magikarp (and Gyarados) shortly. Pokemon Masters EX currently has a Super Spotlight Seasonal Scout event going until January 19 where players can get multiple 5-star pairs, whereas Pokemon Sleep has a New Year event rolling until January 7, providing various bonuses for those who participate. Overall, fans can look forward to a plethora of announcements for these games in the coming weeks.

Pokemon Trading Card Game in 2024

Another big part of the franchise is the tabletop Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG for short), where players can collect a variety of pocket monsters from booster packs, booster boxes, tin boxes, and the likes in order to build fun and competitive decks. There are various releases planned for Pokemon TCG in 2024, although only two of them have an official name at the moment. These include:

  • Paldean Fates, to be released on January 26
  • Temporal Forces, to be released on March 22
  • An unnamed May 2024 release
  • An unnamed August 2024 release
  • An unnamed November 2024 release

Paldean Fates is likely to become one of the most sought-after sets due to it including several shiny Pokemon from the series, as well as quite powerful cards for those interested in the battling side more than the collecting aspect of the game. Other releases are probably getting release dates in the coming weeks.

Pokemon Animation in 2024

Last but not least is the Pokemon anime, with the original Gen 9 series still ongoing in Japan. However, fans can now expect Pokemon Horizons - The Series to be released on Netflix on February 23, 2024, following the story of Liko and Roy and their Pokemon companions Sprigatito and Fuecoco. It is also in the realm of possibilities that a new Pokemon movie will be released, following in the wake of the 2020 release by the name of Pokemon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle. This remains speculation for the time being, but it would make sense based on Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's release.
