The first-anniversary celebration for DeNA's mobile game Pokemon Masters has brought a lot of changes, including its name becoming Pokemon Masters EX — though this turned out to be problematic given an awkward Twitter hashtag. A number of events have been ongoing over the last few weeks, with the latest featuring Lusamine, Lillie, and Gladion from Pokemon Sun and Moon.

This story event, which has been teased in Pokemon Masters' marketing through Lillie appearing in places like a celebratory CG trailer, has the family star in numerous small scenes while trying to become a stronger team so they can win a competition. The event lasts until September 30, and during that period players can receive log-in bonuses like Gems to scout new characters and Skip Tickets to automatically complete certain battles.

Lusamine and Pheromosa, one of the Ultra Beasts introduced by the Pokemon games set in the Alola Region, are available now through a Sync Pair scouting event, and can be promoted to six-star EX status as part of a new mechanic introduced for Pokemon Masters' first anniversary. Gladion and Silvally will be added September 13, while Lillie and Clefairy will be added September 16.

While Masters has not been a cultural phenomenon like Niantic's AR mobile game Pokemon GO, it is a largely successful venture for the multimedia franchise. Sensor Tower reports that Pokemon Masters accumulated $75 million during its first year, which seems enough to at least warrant its extended birthday celebration with gimmicks like filters for Instagram and Facebook.

Pokemon Masters EX is available now on Android and iOS devices.
