Pink gold necklaces of the Water-type Pokemon Magikarp have gone on sale in Japan. Magikarp joins other popular Pokemon such as Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Gengar in becoming jewelry, available for global shipping. While the koi may not be the most powerful Pokemon in the 1008-strong roster, Magikarp has been a fan favorite since the first Generation of Pokemon. Even though the Pokedex is mean to Magikarp, a lot of fans enjoy the comedic value of a Pokemon that can only splash ineffectively. Others appreciate Magikarp because they are perceived as the embodiment of latent potential; they will eventually become a powerful Gyarados one day, after all.RELATED: Pokemon Artist Makes Incredible Lugia 3D CardBoth aspects of Magikarp make them an appealing choice for jewelry, either extenuating the comedic value of Magikarp by rendering them in an unbefitting glory, or as an 18-karat gold emblem of potential. Japanese jeweler U-Treasure has released two variants of the Magikarp pendant. A silver Magikarp with a rose gold coating is available for ¥12,900, roughly $100 US, while the 18-karat variant is being sold for ¥129,000, which is about $970 US. The items are also limited to a count of 129, as this is the Pokemon’s number in the Pokedex.

The simple design of Magikarp, along with their influences from the Japanese god Ebisu, the god of good fortune, do lend themselves to matching jewelry design. The necklace would make for an amazing Pokemon themed present, even though it may seem an odd choice at first.

Although considered by some to be a disappointment for the 1000th Pokedex entry, Gholdengo may have been a more logical choice because that the Pokemon is already golden. That high number would have also allowed for a larger distribution of product, given the theme of selling a quantity to match the Pokedex number. However, the limited amount of Magikarp necklaces available makes the prospect of owning one quite tantalizing and no doubt entices those who've “gotta catch ‘em all.”

With the franchise being over 25 years old at this point, the element of Pokemon nostalgia is still a big draw for fans. However, the IP's age has not impacted its popularity, and it is still running strong internationally, with amazing sales figures for the recently released Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. There is also continued interest in the card game and Pokemon GO, and fans can expect to see many more of the pocket monsters being rendered as fine jewelry and accessories in the years to come.
