Highlights

  • Dunsparce finally got an evolution in Generation 9, but the result was underwhelming.
  • Veluza, a late-game Psychic and Water-type, is in need of a Mega Evolution to justify its place on a team.
  • Pokemon like Cetitan could benefit from a Mega Evolution to give them new roles and keep gameplay fresh.

For the longest time, it seemed like the Mega Evolution feature from Generation 6 of Pokemon would never be seen in the franchise again. Many old Pokemon from the series received temporary new forms with great stats and interesting design choices, but this battle feature did not make a return in the Generation 7 games. This old mechanic is coming back, though, as the developers have announced that Pokemon Legends Z-A will be taking place in the Kalos region and that Mega Evolution will be making a return.

Kalos is the setting for the upcoming Pokemon Legends Z-A. Here's why this choice is actually perfect for the next Pokemon Legends title.

While there are many old Pokemon in the series that fans expect to get a new Mega form, the newest games have also recently added some new creatures in need of some attention. Not every new Pokemon can have a paradox form or be a legendary, after all.

1 Dudunsparce

The Generation 2 Normal-type Pokemon, Dunsparce, remained unloved by the developers for so long. Fans have continued to imagine this seemingly forgotten Pokemon receiving a powerful evolution in the future, with many people assuming that Drampa from the Generation 7 games was a new evolution for this creature. However, the developers finally gave Dunsparce the evolution it needed in Generation 9.

Unfortunately, Dudunsparce left a lot to be desired. While it did receive a stat boost like all evolved forms, it remained a pure Normal-type, and both forms look identical to Dunsparce with nothing but one or two more sections added to its body. With the Pokemon Company playing with fans' expectations in this way, it wouldn't be surprising if they did it again by giving Dudunsparce a Mega Evolution that now has four sections. Alternatively, they could redeem Dudunsparce by giving it a powerful Dragon-type form in the next game.

2 Veluza

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet added many great new Pokemon to the franchise. It is a game that brings in several iconic two-stage and three-stage evolution lines to the series, but there are also a few Pokemon that do not seem to justify their inclusion. One of these Pokemon is the single-stage, Psychic, and Water-type, Veluza. This Pokemon is found quite late in the game in Casseroya Lake, and its bland fish design does not leave a good impression. The typing is good, but chances are that players already have a dependable Water or Psychic type on their team by the time they encounter Veluza.

As such, Veluza is in dire need of an upgrade. A Mega Evolution seems like a natural choice to provide a new form that leans more into Veluza's psychic abilities. Plus, a Mega Evolution would push its stats above five hundred, something that would make it a reliable team member.

3 Cetitan

Pokemon Cetitan

The point of Mega Evolution isn't to solely shine a spotlight on Pokemon that need to improve. This battle mechanic also adds some new life to existing Pokemon that seem like they have nowhere else to go in terms of development. Cetitan is one of those Pokemon that seems perfect in its finished form, which is why this Ice-type could be given a new role with a Mega Evolution.

From cloakless Wormadam to AZ's Floette, these Pokemon forms remain unusable in battle in the mainline series.

Cetitan has an obvious role in battle as it stands. This Ice-type is bulky, with a lofty HP stat of 170. Therefore, it acts like a defensive wall, used to stall out the opponent. However, adding a new type to Cetitan in a Mega Evolution could easily make it a more offensive Pokemon. Perhaps the Ground-type would give it this new purpose.

4 Scovillain

Pokedex Number: 952

Scovillain In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

Scovillain already has many attributes that make it a firm favorite Pokemon from this generation. Its first form, Capsakid, can be found early on in the game, and it is the only Fire and Grass-type to exist in the franchise so far. Plus, Scovillain is used on Arven's team during the Titan Pokemon story arc, so there is a good chance that many players have added this Generation 9 Pokemon to their team, or have faced it in battle.

Such a unique typing is enough to already grant Scovillain a Mega Evolution. However, anyone who obtains this Pokemon early in a playthrough is likely to want to take this Pokemon to the end, and a temporary power-up would help them achieve this. What's more, a Mega Evolution design for Scovillain is easy to do by giving it another head.

5 Klawf

Pokedex Number: 950

Pokemon Klawf

The Pokemon franchise is not lacking in Crab-type Pokemon, which made the inclusion of Klawf in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet a mystery to some players. This single-stage Pokemon can be found early on in the story of these games, as it is the first Titan Pokemon in the region. Plus, players can catch this Pokemon in the area surrounding this encounter. While there is nothing wrong with using a Klawf during a playthrough, it does start to get outmatched in later battles in the game.

Klawf is a single Ground-type, and has a base stat total of only 450, with no chance of improving. Therefore, a Mega Evolution could fix both these problems, and give it the Water-type it sorely needs.

6 Arboliva

Pokedex Number: 930

Pokemon Arboliva

Arboliva is a Pokemon that takes the great things about Scovillain and Cetitan and puts them together. Its first form, Smoliv, is found pretty early on in the game, and its final third-stage form feels complete. With its Grass and Normal typing, and huge special defense stat, Arboliva fits neatly in a team as a healer. The ability of Grassy Terrain also helps it perform this role on a team.

However, Arboliva can also be improved with a Mega Evolution. It is already a great choice for double battles, but perhaps it can improve its usage in single battles by swapping its Normal-type for the Poison-type. Giving Arboliva some status affliction moves in a Mega Evolution could turn this healer into a brutal wall.

7 Orthworm

Pokedex Number: 968

Orthworm is a Pokemon that already seems to have put itself forward as a solid candidate for a new Mega Evolution in the future. This steel worm is based on a tube train and appears in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet as a Titan Pokemon. This version of Orthworm is huge, making it appear as more of a kaiju Pokemon, rather than a normal cute worm. Therefore, it seems its Mega Evolution design has already been teased.

Orthworm also only has a single Steel-type, so it could be given some more potential in battle. Its Earth Eater ability that heals itself when attacked by a ground move would make it a great candidate for a Fire or Electric second type.

8 Flamigo

Pokedex Number: 973

With everything good that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet added to the franchise, there are a few notable missteps. For example, adding a Flying and Fighting-type to the region was a good idea, and so too was creating a Pokemon based on a Flamingo, as this is something the series had yet to do. However, the result of these choices was the very bland-looking bird, Flamigo. It is the very definition of the notion of the developers taking an animal from the real world and just calling it a new Pokemon and very few fans have taken to calling this new creature their favorite.

Flamigo's stats aren't terrible, and it is easy to catch one of the Pokemon early in the game. However, Flamigo is in dire need of a design upgrade and a stat boost to make it feel like a worthwhile Pokemon to use in Generation 9. Fortunately, Mega Evolution can provide Flamigo with both these upgrades.
