Pokemon Legends Z-A: 8 Best Mega Evolutions For Gen 9

Pokemon Legends Z-A has an excellent opportunity to introduce new mega evolutions for the following Gen 9 Pokemon.

Due to the game taking place in Lumiose City of the Kalos region and the nature of its predecessor, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, there is reason to believe some Legendary Pokemon could have more of a chance of receiving a Mega Evolution than others.

10 Celebi

It's Time To Give Celebi A Chance

  • Generation 2
  • Dual Type (Psychic / Grass)

Though, at first thought, a Celebi Mega Evolution may seem unlikely, there are some clues that could give a foundation for the Time Travel Pokemon's appearance and subsequent Mega Evolution. With the previous installment in the Pokemon Legends series, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, taking place in the past, there is a chance that Pokemon Legends: Z-A could follow the same vein. Celebi's time-traveling powers could allow the game to have players jump back and forth in time to various points in Lumiose City's history.

Celebi is also the only Mythical Pokemon to be obtainable more than once in Pokemon X and Y, and with its blanket 100 in every base stat in the game, Mega Celebi could fit any role a trainer needs it to.

9 Articuno

The Icing On A Mega Evolution Cake

  • Generation 1
  • Dual Type (Psychic / Flying)

Articuno is no stranger to alternative forms, with a Regional Galarian Form that changed its typing from Ice Flying to Psychic Flying in The Crown Tundra DLC for Pokemon Sword and Shield being the notable example. Its popularity as an original 151 Pokemon as well as the fact that it also appeared and was catchable in Pokemon X and Y could further point towards a potential Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

Fans could look forward to a Pokemon with great Defensive Stats within an overall Base Stat Total of 680, accounting for the 100 boost from Mega Evolution.

8 Zapdos

A Welcome Shock

Zapdos in the Pokemon anime
  • Generation 1
  • Dual Type (Electric / Flying)

As a member of the Legendary Bird Trio that was obtainable in Pokemon X and Y if trainers picked Fennekin as their starter, Zapdos has the potential to show up upon Kalos' shores once again for Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Zapdos would add credibility to a very small 2 Pokemon list of Electric Mega Evolutions and would provide fans with another redesign of a fan-favorite Pokemon, such as its Galarian Form from The Crown Tundra DLC of Pokemon Sword and Shield.

If Mega Zapdos keeps its original form's typing of Electric/Flying, trainers will only have to watch out for Rock and Ice moves before countering with Zapdos' impressive base 125 Special Attack stat that can only get better once it Mega Evolves.

7 Moltres

Burning Its Way Into Legends

  • Generation 1
  • Dual Type (Fire / Flying)

Familiar with the region of Kalos, the homeland for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Moltres was catchable in Pokemon X and Y at Azure Bay if trainers picked Froakie as their starter. This could be the case again in the upcoming installment in the Legends series, and the Flame Pokemon could also be seen sporting a new Mega Evolution.

Pokemon Legends Z-A: 7 Mechanics From Legends Arceus It Should Keep

With Pokemon Legends Z-A announced for 2025, let's take a look at the mechanics that the game should keep from Pokemon Legends Arceus.

If Moltres gains a Mega Evolution for its original form or its Galarian Form, it will be the first Legendary of its primary typing of Fire and Dark respectively, giving trainers ample reason to add it to their team, even without having to mention its potential 680 Base Stat Pool upon Mega Evolving.

6 Mew

Following Its Clone's Footsteps

  • Generation 1
  • Psychic Type

Along with the Legendary Bird Trio, Mewtwo also found itself in Kalos, allowing trainers to not only catch the Legendary Pokemon from the Unknown Dungeon but also Mega Evolve it. With Mew being the original Pokemon that Mewtwo was based on, Pokemon Legends: Z-A could potentially give the New Species Pokemon the same treatment they did its clone.

Though it's unlikely that Mew will also be given two Mega Evolutions, there is still an opportunity for the Pokemon to expand on its impressive 100 spread over all 6 Primary Base Stats. With Mew's ability to learn any move taught by TM, Pokemon trainers will be lining up to add the Psychic type to their team if it gains a Mega Evolution.

5 Hoopa

Wishing For A Mega Evolution

  • Generation 6
  • Dual Type (Psychic / Ghost)

Due to its Mythical Pokemon status, fans may remember Hoopa more from its movie appearance in Pokemon the Movie: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages than in the video games. However, with its debut coming as an obtainable event Pokemon in Pokemon X and Y, there is a chance that Hoopa could find itself in a story role in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

Hoopa isn't a Pokemon that's unfamiliar to alternate forms, with the Mischief Pokemon coming in either Hoopa Confined form or Hoopa Unbound form via the Prison Bottle. With this in mind, it isn't too much of a stretch to see it also hosting a Mega Evolution form as well, one that could switch up its secondary type much like its Confined and Unbound forms do, being Ghost and Dark type respectively.

4 Volcanion

The Most Unique Mega Evolution Typing

Volcanion In The Pokemon Anime
  • Generation 6
  • Dual Type (Fire / Water)

Volcanion may not be a well-known name among more casual fans of the franchise due to its status as a Mythical Legendary, meaning it was only attainable via events in its video game appearances. Still, with its debut coming in Generation 6 and Pokemon Legends: Z-A taking place in its home region, Volcanion could play a more significant role than it has in the past.

With its unique typing of Fire and Water, meaning no other Pokemon shares its pairing, Volcanion could prove to be a special Mega Evolution that will put other trainers on the defensive against its impressive 130 Special Attack stat.

3 Xerneas

Adding Life To The Mega Evolution Scene

  • Generation 6
  • Fairy Type

Being the box art Legendary for Pokemon X should put Xerneas in the front running for a Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: Z-A with the game taking place in its home region of Kalos. The Life Pokemon could play the same role as Dialga and Palkia. With the Spatial and Temporal Pokemon getting Origin forms, it makes sense that Xerneas would get a unique extra form of its own.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A - 9 Best Eevee Mega Evolutions For The Game

Mega Evolutions are returning for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, which means that some iconic Eevee Mega Evolutions could make an appearance, too.

With the 100 boost of Mega Evolution, Xerneas will have a higher base stat total than its fellow Fairy Mega Evolutions, even piping Mythical Legendary Diancie, which would make it a fine addition to a trainer's team.

2 Yveltal

Bringing Destruction In Its Wake

Yveltal flying through the air in the anime
  • Generation 6
  • Dual Type (Dark / Flying)

With Pokemon Legends: Z-A returning to Kalos, the box art Legendary for Pokemon Y could be in the running for a Mega Evolution. The Destruction Pokemon could play a pivotal role in the main story and would present players with either a very intimidating boss fight or a powerful member of their party. The opportunity for a Mega Yveltal to use its signature move, Oblivion Wing, will more than likely have fans champing at the bit to see this new form.

Mega Yveltal would equal the highest base stat total of any Mega Evolution, rivaling Mega Mewtwo X and Y alongside Mega Rayquaza. With its ability, Dark Aura, boosting the power of Dark Type moves by 33% and an extra STAB bonus, Mega Yveltal could be the best Dark Type in the franchise.

1 Zygarde

The Z In Z-A Stands For Zygarde

Zygarde The Best Pokemon in Gen 6 of Pokemon GO
  • Generation 6
  • Dual Type (Dragon / Ground)

Ever since Pokemon X and Y reached the shelves of local supermarkets, fans of the franchise have been clamoring for Zygarde to get its due diligence. Planned as a trio along with Xerneas and Yeveltal, Zygarde never got a game to showcase its story. Seemingly though, Zygarde will be thrust into the spotlight in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and the perfect way to round out this titular Pokemon is by giving it a Mega Evolution.

Due to its many percentage forms, with a different design at 10% and 50% before its Complete Forme, Zygarde could be given the same treatment as Charizard and Mewtwo, who both have multiple Mega Evolutions. If only one of Zygarde's forms is chosen, fans will be looking for its Complete Forme, whose stat total would rise up to 808 with a Mega Evolution, simultaneously becoming the Pokemon with the highest stat total and the first Pokemon to have a stat total over 800.
