Highlights

  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Teal Mask DLC hints at a potential Gen 5 Pokemon Legends game set in Unova, building on the success of Pokemon Legends: Arceus.
  • A new Pokemon Legends game could introduce new regional forms and cross-Gen evolutions, similar to what was seen in Pokemon Legends: Arceus.
  • Pokemon like Magikarp, Gyarados, Slugma, Magcargo, Electrike, and Manectric could potentially have unique forms or evolutions in a Pokemon Legends Kanto game, enhancing their backstory and gameplay.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's The Teal Mask DLC just came out, and players are already catching new critters and making the most out of their adventures in the land of Kitakami, all while discovering its secret pocket monsters and hidden treasures. After the roaring success of Pokemon Legends: Arceus last year, it's hard to imagine that it won't be the start of a new series, and with The Teal Mask confirming The Indigo Disk's Blueberry Academy is found in Unova, it's even more likely to be a hint that a Gen 5 Pokemon Legends game is coming. Another Pokemon Legends game would then most probably confirm that the original spin-off will spawn a full-fledged series, and a Kanto game would have several Regional Forms and evolutions it could add.

A big allure of another game in this series would be that a Pokemon Legends Kanto's starters could differ dramatically from the original and also offer new regional forms to use in mainline titles, but first-partner critters are not the only ones to enjoy this luxury. Pokemon Legends: Arceus added 6 cross-Gen evolutions and 16 Regional Forms in total, which is quite a lot and could give players an idea about what to expect from another similar game.

Magikarp and Gyarados

Although some players may be caught off-guard by the idea, a Regional Form or cross-Gen evolution for Magikarp would make a lot of sense, especially so in a Pokemon Legends Kanto game. Ever since Pokemon Red and Blue, the Pokedex started featuring an entry about Magikarp being stronger in the past than its current form, and Pokemon Legends as a concept could easily explore just that. Rumors have it that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet should have featured a different form for both Magikarp and Gyarados, but nothing official ever came from that.

Apparently, a regional fake line in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet was designed and then scrapped, at least according to datamining. A regional fake Magikarp and Gyarados would have been a nice touch, but not necessarily what this evolution line needs, considering that its Pokedex entries hint at something cool for a past setting that a game like Pokemon Legends: Arceus could achieve.

Slugma and Magcargo

It's no mystery that Gen 1 Pokemon are often favored when it comes to Regional Forms and cross-Gen evolutions, but since the regions of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh are all connected and part of one nation, it would make sense for Gen 2-through-4 critters to have new tools in a Pokemon Legends Kanto game. Kanto and Johto are even connected thanks to Pokemon Crystal, and since the former features an active volcano, it would make sense for Gen 2's Slugma and Magcargo to have a Kantonian Regional Form or cross-Gen evolution.

According to its Pokedex entries, Magcargo is one of the critters with the highest body temperature ever recorded, and there could be multiple ways to tie this into a Pokemon Legends Kanto game. If the game explored a past version of Kanto, the volcano could either be dormant or still active, prompting Slugma and Magcargo to maybe lose their Fire type or gain a different secondary one in place of Rock, respectively.

Electrike and Manectric

These two Gen 3 creatures are among the very few Electric-type Pokemon in Hoenn, but considering that one of Kanto's biggest landmarks is a power plant, the dog-like mons may have originated there at a different time, then evolved and migrated centuries later. This wouldn't be a first, considering Hisuian starters in Pokemon Legends: Arceus are actually not found in modern-day Sinnoh. In the case of Electrike and Manectric, these creatures could have a redesign that takes them closer to Hisuian Voltorb and Electrode in style, maintaining their Electric type, but adding a secondary one that reshapes their identity in a Pokemon Legends Kanto game.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is available for Nintendo Switch.
