Back in the days of Pokemon Red & Blue, Psychic-types were among the series' very best Pokemon. With the introduction of secondary typings, however, the influence that Psychic-types have had on the Pokemon meta has gradually waned with each new installment and that's something that's definitely evident in Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

This isn't helped by the fact that many of the series best Psychic-type Legendaries failed to make the cut for the Hisui Pokedex that's used in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. This isn't to say that there aren't still a few viable candidates for those who are looking to add a Psychic-type to their team, particularly once players gain access to the game's plentiful post-game content.

Though some may prefer Azelf for its significantly higher base stat total, Alakazam arguably has it beat in the areas that count most. Both Pokemon excel in the Speed and Special Attack departments and while Azelf does also have a high Attack stat, this is somewhat inconsequential given that most of the best Psychic-type attacks tend to fall into the Special category rather than the Physical one. With this in mind, Alakazam's marginally superior Speed and Special Attack stats just about give it the edge over its fellow pure Psychic-type Pokemon. To best utilize Alakazam, players should look for one with a Modest nature, though Mild will also work well.

How to Get Alakazam in Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Players can find an Alpha Alakazam in the Sandgem Flats area of the Obsidian Fieldlands. Alternatively, its unevolved forms Abra and Kadabra can also be found in the same place as well as near Lake Acuity in the Alabaster Icelands. Abra evolves into Kadabra at Level 16, and Kadabra evolves into Alakazam after being traded or exposed to a Linking Cord.

Cresselia is a little lackluster in the offensive department, but what it lacks in bite, it more than makes up for in general sturdiness. Its high defensive stats allow it to take an awful lot of punishment, while its access to strong Fairy-type moves makes it a little more flexible than its pure Psychic-type might otherwise suggest. It's also the only Pokemon that's able to use Lunar Blessing, an incredibly useful move that increases Cresselia's evasion while simultaneously restoring its health. Players should look for a Cresselia with a Calm nature, which increases its Special Defense stat at the expense of its Attack.

How to Get Cresselia in Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Players hoping to catch Cresselia will first need to initiate story mission #23 by speaking with Cogita at the Ancient Retreat once they've finished the main story. They'll then need to make their way to the Coronet Highlands' Moonview Arena and speak with Melli. Once the conversation is over, they'll find themselves in the arena and will have a chance to catch the Lunar Pokemon.

Despite Uxie's base stat total actually being a little lower, it arguably offers up an ever-so-slight improvement over Cresselia due to its superior stat distribution. The pure Psychic-type excels in all the same areas, but boasts higher Defense and Speed stats than the Lunar Pokemon while matching it in the Special Attack and Special Defense departments. Like Cresselia though, Uxie is at its best when it has a Calm nature.

How to Get Uxie in Pokemon Legends: Arceus

To get Uxie, players will first need to complete the main story and then speak with Cogita about the mysterious plates. After doing so, they'll be able to return to the cavern in the center of Lake Acuity, where they'll find Uxie just waiting to be caught.

There aren't too many strong Psychic-type Pokemon with secondary typings in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which makes Gardevoir incredibly useful in certain situations. With it being a Psychic / Fairy-type, it's completely resistant to Dragon-type attacks, though as three of the best Dragon-types in Pokemon Legends: Arceus have either Steel or Ghost as their secondary typing, this isn't quite as useful as it might appear at first glance. All the same, Gardevoir's high Special Attack and Special Defense stats give it the edge over all but a handful of its peers, particularly when it has a Modest or Mild nature.

How to Get Gardevoir in Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Players can find an Alpha Gardevoir down in one of the holes in the ice in the Heart's Crag area of the Alabaster Icelands. Alternatively, they can catch its unevolved forms Ralts and Kirlia in the same location as well as in Snowpoint Temple and the Shrouded Ruins section of the Crimson Mirelands. Ralts will evolve into Kirlia at Level 20 and Kirlia will evolve into Gardevoir at Level 30.

Choosing a Jack-of-all-trades as the best Psychic-type in Pokemon Legends: Arceus may seem like a bit of a cop-out, but in a game with such a high degree of variance, the pure Psychic-type's versatile stats just about gives it the edge. This almost certainly wouldn't have been the case had heavy hitters like Mewtwo or some of the many great dual-type Psychic Legendaries been included in the game, but, as things stand, Mesprit is the best of a fairly underwhelming bunch. Its versatility can make choosing a nature a little tricky, which is why many opt for a Neutral nature like Hardy or Docile.

How to Get Mesprit in Pokemon Legends: Arceus

To catch Mesprit, players will need to make their way back over to the cavern in the center of Lake Verity after they've completed the main story and spoken with Cogita about the plates.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is available now for the Nintendo Switch.
