Highlights

  • The successor to Pokemon Legends: Arceus has the opportunity to get creative with the plot by featuring a new mascot to replace the Mythical mon.
  • In a potential Pokemon Legends Alola game, the Mythical Magearna is the most likely candidate for mascot due to its in-universe lore and the likely time period of the game's setting.
  • The inclusion of Ultra Beasts and the Ultra Wormhole phenomenon in the game could provide exciting boss fights and connect the themes of the Pokemon Legends series.

The sequel to Pokemon Legends: Arceus will have big shoes to fill when finding a suitable mascot to replace the titular Mythical mon. There are many Legendaries and Mythicals present throughout the series that hold significant places within the lore of the Pokemon world, so Game Freak has a lot of room to get creative with the plot of this follow-up title. If the successor to Pokemon Legends: Arceus is set in Gen 7's Alola Region, one surprising critter could be featured at the center of the game's time traveling tale.

After the limited number of Legendaries and Mythicals available in Gen 6, Pokemon Sun and Moon saw a return to form for the series and introduced a wide variety of new Legendary and Mythical Mons. For the first time in the series, the games' mascot Legendaries Solgaleo and Lunala ended up being evolutions of another Legendary critter, Cosmog, and the Guardian Deities Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, and Tapu Fini rounded out the lore of Alola's islands. There were also a handful of new Mythicals added like Marshadow and Zeraora, but the mon most likely to be featured as the mascot of a Pokemon Legends Alola game would be the Mythical Magearna.

Magearna Would be the Most Likely Mythical Mascot of a Pokemon Legends Alola

Magearna was the first new Gen 7 mon revealed prior to the release of Pokemon Sun and Moon in 2016, making it a fitting creature to play a key role in a Pokemon Legends Alola game. Beyond this notable reveal, Magearna's in-universe lore makes it the perfect candidate for a game where players travel to a past version of the Alola Region. This Mythical is said to have been created by a scientist nearly 500 years ago, giving a Pokemon Legends Alola game the perfect time period for its setting and putting Magearna in a great position to have its lore fleshed out.

The scientist who created Magearna utilized life energy collected from other Pokemon to create the Soul-Heart at the center of Magearna's true body. As a result, Magearna is a very emotionally intelligent creature and will try to save any injured mon it can. The desire to heal injured creatures could play well into Pokemon Legends: Arceus' emphasis on the ferocity of these critters, and frenzying Noble Pokemon could need to be quelled using Magearna's healing capabilities as part of the game's storyline.

Another unique aspect of Magearna that could be included in a Pokemon Legends Alola game is the two different color variants it has, with Original Color Magearna more closely resembling the color palette of a Pokeball. Perhaps this game could follow the story of the scientist attempting to create Magearna with the player being tasked with collecting the life energy from strong Pokemon. This story could explore the morally questionable practice of extracting life energy from wild mons, with the twist being that the scientist creating Magearna ends up as the villain and Magearna seeks to heal injured and enraged mons as a way of making amends.

Magearna would be the most likely mascot for a Pokemon Legends Alola game due to its creation happening 500 years in the past, as well as the gameplay and lore potential it holds for a game like this.

A big part of the Gen 7 entries was the role Ultra Space, Ultra Wormholes, and Ultra Beasts played in those games, and while it's debatable whether Ultra Beasts are Legendary, sub-legendary, or neither, they would still likely be important factors in this game as well. The Ultra Wormhole phenomenon could even be a natural explanation as to how the player ends up in a past version of Alola. Additionally, Ultra Beasts would make for exciting boss fights similar to the Noble Pokemon of Pokemon Legends: Arceus and would tie help together the themes of these Pokemon Legends games.
