A skilled Pokemon fan is showing off impressive Halloween versions of the classic Starters from Red and Blue. The original trio of Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle were the very first Pokemon that many players recruited back in the late 90s, and they would set the standard for the rest of the Pokemon series going forward. After booting up a new game in Pokemon Red and Blue, players would have a choice between the three, with each one representing a different element and serving as a sort of difficulty setting for the first two Gym Leaders.

Due to how iconic and prevalent the Kanto region starters are in the Pokemon games, anime, and other related media, many fans have created artwork of Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle over the years. This includes creating new variants of the original trio, which run the gamut from swapping their types to imagining the Pokemon starters as Digimon. There have also been plenty of fun seasonal Pokemon redesigns centered around famous holidays like Christmas and Halloween, and naturally, the Red and Blue starters tend to be the most frequent subjects of such artwork.

A Pokemon fan shows their love for both the franchise and the season by carving up a Pikachu-themed jack-o-lantern for Halloween.

A Reddit user by the handle of MunchyKu recently got into the Halloween spirit by showing off their spooky Pokemon Red and Blue starter variants on r/pokemon. These October-themed versions of Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle are recolored in black and orange, with a few charming Halloween twists on their designs for good measure. Bulbasaur and Squirtle have had their bulb and shell replaced by pumpkins, while the flame at the end of Charmander’s tail now sports a creepy yet cute skull on the bottom that might bring Marvel’s Ghost Rider to mind.

Other Reddit users have complimented MunchyKu on their cute Halloween starter Pokemon redesigns, with some even wishing that something like them was available in Pokemon GO. This is just the latest instance of players making new Pokemon fan art in time for Halloween, as someone else recently posted a collection of 19 Halloween Pokemon variants. Other festive Pokemon fan works include a similar Halloween plushie of Bulbasaur and creative Halloween costumes for already spooky Ghost types like Gengar and Sableye.

Pokemon and Halloween tend to go well together, as evidenced by the countless events themed after the supernatural holiday in games like Pokemon GO. MunchyKu’s black-and-orange Red and Blue starter variants are another fun example of this, offering up cute redesigns of some of the Pokemon franchise’s most famous creatures in time for this year’s Halloween. Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle all look great in this alternate color scheme, and it raises the question of how Pokemon’s other starter trios would look with this type of palette.
