Pokemon fan art gives the Johto starters a redesign inspired by the 2006 Capcom hit, Okami. Okami was released to widespread praise for its gameplay and art style, and this Pokemon fan thinks the latter is suitable for the Nintendo franchise.

Okami is an action-adventure game that features a unique art style and gameplay akin to a Zelda title. Since its release, Okami has been remastered on various consoles, including Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox Series X/S. Because of this, the game has seen renewed interest from gamers who didn't try it in the 2000s. Okami has been met with positive reviews on every platform that it has released on, and it regularly gets discounted by Capcom to help broaden its potential audience. One Pokemon fan had the idea to give the Johto starters an incredible redesign inspired by Okami.

Pokemon Art Exhibition Coming this Summer

Pokemon will be taking over the Tokyo skyline all summer in an impressive event.

Reddit user Foxinajacket recently shared three fan art images, each focused on one Johto starter Pokemon in the Okami aesthetics. Cyndaquil looks straight out of the sixth console generation game, with the fire on its backside resembling fire from Amaterasu. As long-time Okami fans may already know, the main character is Sun Goddess Amaterasu. While each of the three Pokemon has swirls added to their design, Totodile has wing-like appendages that look like they'd help the Water-type Pokemon navigate bodies of water. Chikorita has changed the most drastically in this fan art, with its body appearing furry and its eyes giving a sinister stare instead of its normally cheerful look.

Could a Future Pokemon Legends Game Feature Okami-Style Art?

Each Pokemon has face and body paint that resembles paint on various Okami characters. Although Amaterasu isn't the only face-painted character in Okami, the white wolf seemingly inspired these Pokemon Gen 2 starter redesigns. While it's unconfirmed, the fan art appears to have been done digitally despite the canvas resembling an old parchment. The images include katakana writing that spells out each Pokemon's name, further encapsulating the hand-painted Okami style. While Pokemon Legends Arceus featured moments with traditional art, this redesign shows how The Pokemon Company could take the aesthetics a step further.

As Foxinajacket has confirmed that they're taking commissions, this may not be the last Pokemon project they showcase. Each Pokemon generation features its own Pokedex entries, so this artist has a lot of potential material with starter Pokemon alone. Beyond fresh entries, there are also regional variants, Gigantamax, Dynamax, Terastallized, and many alternate forms of Pokemon the fan art could include.
