As part of Pokemon GO's Halloween 2018 event, Niantic has introduced a new special research dubbed A Spooky Message into the gameWhile the main reward that everyone is after is Spiritomb, each task itself has some worthwhile rewards. Each of the first two steps, for example, rewards player with 10 Pokeballs, 1080 stardust, and 8 silver Pinap berries.

As seen below, the third step is just bonus experience and rewards for completing the first two. After completing the second set of tasks, Pokemon GO players will receive a total of 18 Spiritomb candy, 1080 Stardust, and 3,240 XP, which many will likely spend on their Spiritomb. While these tasks are rather straightforward, each set of them also rewards players with two Pokemon encounters. The second task of each set simply rewards players with 1080 XP.

Per the encounter rewards, Pokemon GO players can expect the Pokemon seen below. Catching the 10 Ghost-types rewards player with Duskull, and Catching the 10 Dark-type Pokemon rewards players with Misdreavus. Some players may be perplexed by the Lickitung reward encounter seen in the first step, but it actually makes a lot of sense.

While Lickitung is not a Ghost- or Dark-type Pokemon, it is #108 of the Kanto Pokedex. This number is directly related to Spiritomb, as it was formed by "108 spirits." Moreover, Spiritomb is #108 on the Sinnoh Pokedex, which is a small lore-related connection for the mobile ARG. It also appears to be the rationale behind the "use 108 berries" and "catch 108 Pokemon" quests.

Nevertheless, while these rewards will likely be well-received, it is not the only treat that Niantic had in store for this year's Pokemon GO Halloween event. In fact, it also introduced the gen 4 Ghost- and Dragon-type legendary Giratina as a tier 5 raid boss. For those encountering difficulties with the behemoth, we've compiled a counter guide here. As the Halloween 2018 event continues, good luck, trainers!
