Highlights

  • Gen 9 Pokemon from the Paldea region will be coming to Pokemon GO in September, signaling the availability of Pokemon from all main series regions in the game.
  • Details about the specific Pokemon and their release date have not been provided, but hints suggest that the Paldea starters and their evolutions will likely be the first to appear.
  • The addition of Gen 9 Pokemon could lead to significant changes in Pokemon GO, including the potential introduction of Tera types and new evolutions/regional variations for existing Pokemon.

The first Pokemon from the Paldea region are finally confirmed to be arriving soon in Pokemon GO. The popular mobile game still hasn't added many of Gen 8's Pokemon yet, but this addition will mean Pokemon from every main series region are available in Pokemon GO.

The recent Pokemon Presents event was full of announcements about the future of the series, from new information about the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC to the introduction of Pokemon Stadium 2 to Nintendo Switch Online. As far as Pokemon GO is concerned, there wasn't a massive amount of new info that wasn't already available before, but the reveal of Gen 9 Pokemon arriving in the game is a major one that could mean some major changes coming in the near future.

The Pokemon Presents announcement states that Pokemon from the Paldea region will begin appearing in Pokemon GO beginning this September. There wasn't any more specific date given other than September, so it's unknown exactly when in the month that Scarlet and Violet's debut into the mobile game will truly begin, but it's a very close release window, regardless. The announcement also doesn't get particularly specific on which Paldea Pokemon will be coming to the game, though there are some hints.

In the brief shoe-related preview, silhouettes of Paldea's starters, Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, are all shown prancing past a window. It's fair to assume, especially considering past trends of introducing a new region's Pokemon into Pokemon GO, that those three along with their Scarlet and Violet evolutions will likely be the first to appear. It's possible that more could be arriving in addition to those, but nothing in the announcement seems to tease toward that.

The addition of Gen 9 Pokemon could have major implications for the future of Pokemon GO, since it could also mean the introduction of Tera types in the near future. Tera types recently came to the Pokemon TCG and they're mixing things up in the meta there, as they'd certainly do in Pokemon GO if they were brought in sometime soon. Gen 9 would also be bringing in a number of new evolutions and regional variations for Pokemon that are already in the game, such as Wooper, Girafarig, and Dunsparce. Overall, the introduction of everything Scarlet and Violet into Pokemon GO could lead to some major changes on the horizon.
