Niantic's augmented reality mobile game Pokemon GO will soon be celebrating its sixth birthday. Pokemon GO and its community are still going strong, with the number of active users around 71 million worldwide as of 2021. Currently, the game has added around 730 Pokemon out of a possible 898, including a number of Legendary and Mythical Pokemon from across the generations up to Pokemon Sword and Shield.

In summer 2017, Pokemon GO rolled out its Raid Battle system that featured Legendary Pokemon in celebration of the game's first anniversary. Since then, the game has slowly introduced more opportunities to catch Legendary and Mythical Pokemon through Raid Battles, and later on with the introduction of Special Research. However, despite the soft rollout of Generation 8 Pokemon like Zacian and Zamazenta, there are still a good few Legendary and Mythical Pokemon missing from the game as of June 2022.

In early June 2022, the Mythical Pokemon Shaymin became available through Special Research for Pokemon GO Fest 2022 in its Land Forme, while its Sky Forme will be available starting July.

As of June 2022, less than a handful of Legendary Pokemon from Pokemon Sun and Moon have been introduced, though players have notably been given the opportunity to battle and catch the guardian deities of Alola, including Tapu Fini. Despite this, there are still eight Legendary and Mythical Pokemon from Pokemon Sun and Moon that are missing from Pokemon GO.
