In the midst of the on-going pandemic, Pokemon GO has adapted and made the game more accessible to players the world over. It also hasn't slowed the hype train of content, as Zekrom is joining raids on June 16, new Galarian Pokemon are coming to the game, and more. However, typically one of the most hyped aspects of the game every month is a bit of a letdown.

Every month, Pokemon GO players complete Field Research to earn immediate rewards, as well as the monthly reward breakthrough. Pokemon GO's June 2020 Research breakthrough reward is Trapinch with extra candies. This pales in comparison to the rotation of unique and legendary Pokemon that have appeared before, for a number of reasons.

Taking to several internet forums, players have expressed a number of disappointments with the June Research Breakthrough. First, Trapinch isn't nearly as popular as legendary rewards, nor is it a particularly strong Pokemon for the Meta. Many remember that it headlined a Pokemon GO Community Day not too long ago, and as one Redditor put it, "I doubt that event 5% of players need/want one..."

It seems developers have been looking for a middle ground for obtaining easy legendaries and providing fans Pokemon they enjoy as well, as Trapinch may be the worst offender, but recent breakthroughs have been Lapras, Woobat, Ferroseed, Alolan Exeggutor, and Shinx. Pokemon GO players were really only satisified with the latter, as it filled a nice rare, unique, and beloved role, while the others are more or less niche in terms of popularity, and many were hoping for something big after the recent Pokemon GO downtime.

Then there's the gratification of the reward. Completing the Pokemon GO Research Breakthrough requires 7 stamps, meaning players can only get 4/month at most. Doing so to get extra candy for legendaries makes a lot of sense or stocking up on Shinx to get its final evolution, but many don't see much point in working on research just to keep 4 Trapinch who come with extra candy. In short, Trapinch is just the epitome of a Pokemon GO system seemingly becoming too caught up with new additions.

Pokemon GO is out now in select regions for Android and iOS devices.
