Pokemon GO is celebrating its fifth anniversary, and, until July 15, Niantic has increased spawn rates for selected Pokemon, added a special Flying Pikachu to catch, and increased Lure Module duration, amongst other benefits.

Trainers can also earn the Elite Collector medal, 3 Candies, 80 Pokeballs, and a guaranteed encounter with the special Flying Pikachu. To do this, 19 different starter Pokemon need to be caught, and the Sinnoh region grass-type, Turtwig, is amongst them.

Where to find Turtwig

There are a few different ways to find Turtwig in Pokemon GO, including:

  • By searching near grassy areas, especially in sunny/clear weather
  • Using Lure Modules and Mossy Lure Modules at PokeStops
  • Picking up the 'Make 5 Great Throws' Research Task at PokeStops

The best way to currently find Turtwig is to obtain the 'Make 5 Great Throws' Research Task. Even if trainers don’t live near grassy areas, or are experiencing clear/sunny weather, they can find Turtwig, Piplup, or Chimchar as a guaranteed reward for completing the research. It is random which of the three Pokemon will be encountered, but it is still better odds than hoping Turtwig spawns in the wild.

Research Tasks are obtained by spinning PokeStops, and what task is given at each PokeStop will change every day. Trainers will need a free slot to pick up the research, which can be made by completing a current task or trashing an unwanted one.

To do this, press the bin icon on the top right-hand corner of the task trainers wish to discard. Completing this specific research is the best way to find Turtwig during the special event, but there is another method to searching for the Sinnoh starter Pokemon.

Other ways to find Turtwig

If the random chance of encountering Turtwig after completing the ‘Make 5 Great Throws’ Research Task isn’t being kind to trainers, they can also increase their odds of finding Turtwig by placing a Lure Module at a PokeStop. With the increased spawn rate of the grass-type starter during this special anniversary event, and an extended timer of one hour with all types of Lure Modules, a Turtwig has quite a high chance of spawning at a PokeStop when combined with a Lure.

To further increase the likelihood of Turtwig spawning, a Mossy Lure Module can be placed on a PokeStop instead. This increases the chances of a grass-type Pokemon appearing. Lure Modules can be purchased from the in-game shop for 100 PokeCoins, or 8 Modules can be bought for 680 PokeCoins. A Mossy Lure Module is a little more expensive at 200 PokeCoins, and they cannot be bought in bulk for a discount.

Trainers have until July 15 (8 pm local time) to find Turtwig, along with the other 18 Pokemon, if they want to receive the rewards and Elite Collector medal before the anniversary event ends. Lures and spawn rates will go back to normal as well, but there should be other benefits added to the game during Pokemon GO Fest 2021 soon after.

Pokemon GO is available now on Android and iOS devices.
