Pokemon GO fans are out in full force now that GO Fest 2020 is finally underway. The yearly event has gone entirely virtual, and is set to bring back powerful Legendaries like Deoxys and introduce newcomers like Bouffalant and Emolga.

Emolga, along with Sewaddle, Cottonee, Bouffalant, and Elgyem, will be making a debut during Pokemon GO Fest 2020, provided that participating Pokemon Trainers around the world can work together to complete Global Challenges. Players hoping to encounter the lovable Emolga should set their sights on Unova Week, which will be unlocked if GO Fest 2020 Trainers worldwide can complete a total of at least 24 of the 32 Global Challenges.

Players successfully sleuthed their way through recent GO Fest puzzle challenges, but these Global tasks will require actual in-game participation. The Global Challenges, which can be tracked by Pokemon GO Fest 2020 ticket-holders through the Today View menu, change every hour of the event (from 10 AM - 8 PM local time,) and vary by time zone. All players can access the challenge details via the Virtual Team Lounge on the official Pokemon GO site. There will be 32 different Global Challenges for participants around the world to take on, and a new Ultra Unlock bonus week will be awarded upon the completion of 8, 16, and 24 Global Challenges each.

The first of three Ultra Unlock bonus weeks features Dragon-type Pokemon like the elusive Gible, and the second week, "Enigma Week" will introduce the martian-like Elgyem. If GO Fest 2020 Trainers succeed in completing 24 Global Challenges, they will unlock "Unova Week," earning players worldwide a shot at a handful of new Pokemon, all hailing from the Unova region.

If Unova Week is unlocked, it will take place from August 14 (4 PM EST)  - August 21 (4 PM EST).

  • Sewaddle, Cottonee, and other Gen V Pokémon will appear more frequently in the wild and hatch from 7 km Eggs - players will also have a rare chance at encountering Emolga!
  • Bouffalant will also be found in the wild, and in 5 km Eggs, in New York City and its surrounding areas.
  • Roggenrola, Genesect, and other Gen V Pokémon will appear in raids. Lucky Pokemon Trainers may encounter a Shiny Roggenrola or Genesect, too.

So basically, trainers with their eyes on Emolga will simply have to save their Pokeballs and gifts until mid-August. If and when Unova Week kicks off, players should simply set out into the wild (at a socially safe distance,) and hope to run into the cute gliding critter. Unfortunately, there won't be any special GO Fest habitats for Emolga, but players can also be sure to open gifts and incubate the accompanying 7 km eggs during Unova Week, as Emolga will be available as a rare hatch too.

Pokemon GO is available now on the App Store and Google Play.
