Pokemon GO'slargest ever Special Research event has arrived and players are able to start catching Kant- region Pokemon from home to work through the long list of tasks. Although the event may be long and require a lot of work, players who stick to it are going to earn some very exciting encounter rewards - including one with Mewtwo.

Many players likely have already obtained Mewtwo thanks to its long stay in EX Raid Battles when those kicked off, but you can't really have too many of the powerful and iconic Pokemon. The Gen 1 Mythic Pokemon is one of the most popular in the game and it is still very relevant to the ongoing Pokemon GO PvE metagame.

In order to actually unlock the Mewtwo encounter, PoGO players simply need to power through the nine-part Kanto research until they reach the final stage. Completing the last task for this first third of the longer adventure will unlock the Mewtwo encounter. To get to that point, players will need to complete the following steps...

Step 1

  • Catch 3 Grass, Water, or Fire-type Pokemon (10 Pokeballs)
  • Take a snapshot of a Bug-type Pokemon (5 Pinap Berries)
  • Catch a Rock-type Pokemon (500 Stardust)

Rewards: Onix encounter, 1 Rare Candy, 2 Golden Razz Berries

Step 2

  • Battle in a raid (Clefairy encounter)
  • Transfer 3 Pokemon (10 Super Potions)
  • Catch a Water-type Pokemon (500 Stardust)

Rewards: Starmie encounter, 1 Rare Candy, 2 Silver Pinap Berries

Step 3

  • Evolve 3 Pokemon (10 Great Balls)
  • Hatch an Egg (Snorlax encounter)
  • Catch an Electric-type Pokemon (500 Stardust)

Rewards: Raichu encounter, 1 Rare Candy, 2 Golden Razz Berries

Step 4

  • Give your buddy a treat (Gastly encounter)
  • Send a gift to a friend (Dratini encounter)
  • Catch a Grass-type Pokemon (500 Stardust)

Rewards: Tangela encounter, 1 Rare Candy, 2 Silver Pinap Berries

Step 5

  • Earn a candy walking with your buddy (5 Ultra Balls)
  • Make 3 Great Throws (Chansey encounter)
  • Catch a Poison-type Pokemon (500 Stardust)

Rewards: Weezing encounter, 1 Rare Candy, 2 Golden Razz Berries

Step 6

  • Take a snapshot of a Ghost-type Pokemon (Hitmonchan encounter)
  • Catch a Fighting-type Pokemon (Lapras encounter)
  • Catch a Psychic-type Pokemon (500 Stardust)

Rewards: Alakazam encounter, 1 Rare Candy, 2 Silver Pinap Berries

Step 7

  • Take a snapshot of an Ice-type Pokemon (10 Hyper Potions)
  • Evolve a Pokemon (Aerodactyl encounter)
  • Catch a Fire-type Pokemon (500 Stardust)

Rewards: Arcanine encounter, 1 Rare Candy, 2 Golden Razz Berries

Step 8

  • Power up a Pokemon 6 times (1 Charged TM)
  • Battle another Trainer (1 Star Piece)
  • Catch a Ground-type Pokemon (500 Stardust)

Rewards: Nidoking encounter, 1 Rare Candy, 2 Silver Pinap Berries

Step 9

Rewards: 9,000 XP, Mewtwo encounter, 10 Rare Candies
