Pokemon GO will soon be reintroducing the Ultra League for the Pokemon GO Battle League. Unlike the Great League that has a max Pokemon CP of 1,500, the Ultra League has a max CP of 2,500. This means more powerhouse oriented Pokemon on players' teams will get a chance to shine.
Because players have no way to guess what other trainers will be throwing at them, it's best for players to select Pokemon with versatility to minimize switching in the middle of a battle. It's also important to have Pokemon that are capable of withstanding the charged attacks of opposing Pokemon.
Players should note that while the following Pokemon are considered to be the current meta in Pokemon GO, there will additionally be trainers running "anti-meta" parties and the current meta could change at any time.
The current top four Pokemon that are considered to be S Tier among Pokemon GO's PVP scene are:
- Cresselia
- Swampert
- Registeel
- Giratina (Altered Form)
All of these Pokemon have type variety in their move sets as well as boast very powerful stats. They additionally are capable of tanking many different attacks. Players however should be careful of the aforementioned "anti-meta" parties when using these party members.
Cresselia is capable of the three powerful moves Psycho Cut, Future Sight, and Moonblast. She was recently obtainable through the recent Sinnoh throwback event as well. Registeel is another great tank with the type known for tanking, steel-type. Being a pure steel-type, Registeel is weak to fighting, ground, and fire. However, it also heavily resists eleven other types. Its best moveset is Metal Claw and Flash Cannon as they both provide a STAB bonus that comes in handy during long battles.
Finally Giratina in its altered form is an especially powerful Pokemon with the powerful moves of Shadow Claw, Dragon Claw, and Shadow Sneak. Giratina has both a dragon and ghost-typing allowing for interesting battles with good advantage.
