A Pokemon fan has made an impressive Gengar art piece using Pokemon TCG trading cards featuring its evolutionary line that includes Gastly and Haunter. Many of today's Pokemon fans around the world still enjoy the original 151 from the Pokemon Red and Blue Pokedex, and this fan art is a unique way of celebrating some of the first Ghost Pokemon.
A Reddit user has garnered nearly 2,000 likes on their Pokemon TCG fan art that combines several trading cards to create a Gengar silhouette while representing the Pokemon that evolve up to it. Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar were all introduced with Pokemon Red and Blue, which is fittingly reflected in the Pokemon TCG packs in which the first print of the three was in the Fossil set, debuting shortly after the Jungle series. Since then, the three have been included in over 24 different types of booster packs, standard decks, metal tins, etc.
Reddit user Kazax1 recently shared their Pokemon TCG Gengar fan art that features about 30 different cards that are mostly face down, with different versions of Gastly and Haunter in the middle. The Haunter and Gastly Pokemon TCG cards are cut in a way that successfully replicates the Gen 1 Ghost-type Pokemon that's been part of many parties and decks alike given its power. Beyond the form of Gengar being central to the fan art, there are also cleverly placed red eyes in the middle of the figure, a familiar giveaway for a hidden Gengar in the Pokemon anime.
Because the art of other cards pokes through, a first glance may suggest that Gengar is cut out of the cards in the middle, but the cards to create it are separate from the background ones. Given the Psychic-type nature of the Pokemon in the trading card game, the purple color scheme of Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar match that of the final evolution which effectively created the silhouette. Based on the Pokemon TCG art of the cards in the middle, there are at least three sets that are represented to create the Gengar that's surrounded by facedown cards, which may be part of the same evolution line or could just be more readily available energy cards.
Although the Gengar in the middle of the Pokemon Gen 1 fan art could be further encapsulated by adding Gengar's wide grin, Kazax1 may have omitted the recognizable characteristic in favor of showcasing the cards in the middle. Given that Kazax1 hasn't responded to any of the feedback they've received for their Pokemon TCG fan art, it's currently unclear whether they'll be making replicas for shops like Etsy or if this piece will remain the only one.
