Electric Pokémon have been at the forefront of the Pokémon franchise for a long time. Anyone who's even vaguely heard of the franchise will know why — Pikachu has always been the fan favorite. He was introduced in the show as Ash's first and best buddy, was the forefront of Pokémon Yellow, one of the major Gameboy games, and has even found his own live action movie in the form of Detective Pikachu. Electric types aren't even offered as one of the conventional starters in the traditional strategy games, yet look at how popular and common Pikachu has made them!

Electric types are awesome to have and out of the nine that can be found in generation one, there are some that are more awesome than others. Pick your electric type carefully if you want to have one on your party — and you probably should, to attack those annoying water and flying types. Electric will take them down instantly.

10 Voltorb

Voltorb is a semi-common Pokémon that is simply... not all that impressive. Sorry, Voltorb! A Pokéball with an angry expression, it can take down those flying and water types that you need to get rid of but isn't all that good for much else. If you're looking for an electric addition to your team, you can surely do better than this one. Of course, they're fairly easy to find in comparison to some of the others, so there's that — maybe they can be a temporary teammate until you find something better and can chuck them in the PC box.

9 Magnemite

8 pokemon generations magnemite hurt after attack Magnemite is fine for taking down others that need electricity to faint, just like Voltorb, but it's a steel type so it's also particularly weak to fire. Like Voltorb, there aren't many aesthetically pleasing qualities about this one, and it's semi-common to come across — it's another one that might be good to have until you find a better electric type. Just remember not to put it up against fire types, because they'll take it down in a second.

7 Electrode

Electrode is the evolution of Voltorb and perhaps one of the evolutions that just... doesn't seem to have much creativity put into it. It's Voltorb, but it's bigger, has the colors reversed, and looks a little happier than its angry pre-evolution.

Still, the good thing about this Pokémon is that the stats are better than Voltorb's, so you can use it in battle and it won't go down as quickly.

6 Magneton

Magneton is essentially three Magnemites joined together, which makes sense when you consider the fact it's Magnemite's evolution. Is it a good Pokémon to have on the team? It's solidly okay. It'll get the job done if you're up against a Pokémon that needs some electric moves to be sent down, but again, it's a steel type so it's easy to forget that fire moves will absolutely ruin it very quickly despite fire having no obvious advantage over electric. It is a second and final evolution though, so it's more powerful than the weaker, first evolution electric types.

5 Electabuzz

Somewhat rarer than the first few electric types is Electabuzz! Depending on the game, this one can be hard to find and as far as gen one goes, it is a single evolution (though it does later have an adorable baby pre-evolution). L.T. Surge owns an Electabuzz, which should suggest it's pretty powerful — he is a gym leader, after all — but then again, he doesn't have much choice when it comes to gen one electric types since there are only nine of them.

4 Jolteon

Jolteon may not be the most adorable Eevee-lution (sorry, Jolteon, that goes to Flareon as far as gen one goes!) but it's still a pretty powerful Pokémon. Giving Eevee a thunderstone (or nicknaming it correctly when playing Pokémon GO) will gift you with a Jolteon, and this is an absolutely solid electric type to have on the team. Its powerful moves and decent stats mean it won't let you down.

3 Raichu

Many people don't want their Pikachu to evolve because the mouse Pokémon is so popular and adorable, but if you're willing to give it a thunder stone then you'll have a Pokémon that's even more powerful — Raichu! Its electric moves are unparalleled, but there's a lesson to be learned from the anime when Ash's Pikachu goes against Surge's Raichu.

Before you use your thunder stone, level your Pikachu up and let it learn agility moves. If you evolve it too soon, Raichu will level up without learning them. Put some effort into training the lower evolution before you get overexcited for powerful electricity and claim your Raichu!

2 Zapdos

zaps

The legendary birds of the games can only be caught once (unless you're playing Pokémon GO) in the games where they're even available, which makes them some of the rarest Pokémon across the whole series. The second movie also shone a spotlight on them when someone evil was trying to capture them for selfish reasons, giving us some real feelings for these amazing birds.

There's the ice bird Articuno, the fire bird Moltres, and finally, the electric bird Zapdos. One of the most powerful Pokémon out there, like most legendaries, this Pokémon has no evolutions, but it is absolutely worth having. More so than most other electric Pokémon.

A first evolution making top of the list? What?

But could the place on the top of the list not be given to Pikachu? Pikachu is the gateway into Pokémon for most fans and players. Pikachu is the mouse Pokémon that won the hearts of many, whether it be through the anime, through the games while watching him follow the trainer around in Pokémon Yellow (revolutionary for the games at that point), or through the live action Detective Pikachu. It's almost impossible to go anywhere in the world these days without seeing Pikachu merch, and fans aren't upset about it. Nor should they be.
