A creative and artistically gifted Pokemon fan is grabbing the attention of hundreds of others for their impressive regional variant concept design of Dunsparce. The fan-made piece of art features the fan-favorite Pokemon with greatly altered features, in addition to an interesting new evolution idea proving to be popular among those who view it.

For those who may be unaware, Dunsparce is a Normal-type Pokemon introduced back in Pokemon's second generation. Known as the Land Snake Pokemon, Dunsparce didn't evolve from or into any other forms for years up until the release of Gen 9, with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet revealing Dunsparce's evolution Dudunsparce. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet fans were unhappy with Dunsparce's evolution when it was first revealed, potentially the reason for a number of fan redesigns such as the one featured below.

The Dunsparce regional variant in question comes from a Reddit user with the handle of FallinDevast, who posted their art to one of the site's main Pokemon pages. Instead of Normal typing, the pair of "Aspius" are dual-type Dragon/Fairy Pokemon, and feature a brighter color scheme than their contemporaries. Leaning more into the serpentine end of the design as opposed to insectoid, the Aspius feature elongated tails with bright blue or pink rings, assumingly indicating gender, along with the same coloring on their undersides. The eyes have been completely changed, opting for big expressive eyes that match their rings.

The reasoning for there being two of the Dunsparce regional variant becomes clear when examining "Copuceus," the variant's evolution. The pair of snake-like Pokemon intertwine together, forming a pair of symmetrical wings from their individual ones. The pair are certainly affectionate with one another, with hearts floating around all the regional variants in the image. Copuceus is effectively two of the Aspius permanently fused together, similar to a Pokemon such as Magneton. Fan response to the fan-made variants has been strong, with the post garnering nearly 500 upvotes and dozens of comments within just hours of being posted.

While the affectionate, intertwined nature of the Dunsparce regional variant evolution has a few Pokemon fans raising their eyebrows, it's nothing compared to the creepy AI-generated Dunsparce evolution idea that spread online prior to the actual reveal of Dudunsparce. The output of an AI image generator imagined a nightmareish bipedal monster that commentors said looked like something out of Bloodborne or similar, a far cry from either the canonical evolution or the fan-created regional variant above.

Despite being considered one of the most useless Pokemon of all time, Dudunsparce has gained some fans since its release, with the notoriously difficult-to-get three segment Dudunsparce a prize for many Pokemon trainers. With so many fans creating regional variants of Pokemon, it should be interesting to see what creatures will officially receive regional variants next.
