  • Mewtwo's symbolism as a representation of human science's impact on nature aligns with the theme of nuclear warfare and its consequences in the Fallout games.

A new piece of Pokemon fan art turns the infamous Mewtwo into a wasteland survivor from Fallout. Mewtwo is one of the most memorable creatures in the original lineup of 150 Pokemon thanks to its rare Legendary status, incredible psychic abilities, and surprisingly dark backstory. In Pokemon Red and Blue, Mewtwo was created by scientists as a clone of Mew - only to rebel against said creators and instead roam the world in search of worthy opponents to battle. Mewtwo has since appeared in later Pokemon spin-offs like Pokemon GO and Detective Pikachu, and will return alongside Mew in an upcoming Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC event.

Mewtwo has also been the subject of various Pokemon fan art, which capture the Genetic Pokemon’s distinct feline-like design in paintings, colored-pencil drawings, and even LED lights. Some more bizarre pieces have seen Mewtwo fused with the very unlikely Magikarp, while other players have brought Mewtwo into other games like Street Fighter 6 through mods. Of course, Mewtwo is no stranger to crossovers, having made multiple appearances in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Now Mewtwo is stepping into another, far less colorful gaming world thanks to a new piece of fan art from Reddit user Kaminari_Taimei. This drawing was posted to r/Pokemonart earlier this week, and shows Mewtwo wearing the dusty brown Bomber jacket from Fallout 4. Mewtwo also has the signature Fallout Pip-Boy computer mounted on its wrist (which would help it navigate the dangerous, radioactive wasteland of Bethesda's post-apocalyptic RPG series), as well as a monster skull on its left shoulder.

The similarities between Pokemon and Fallout begin and end with both being RPGs that allow players to explore a vast open-world landscape, as the former takes place in a peaceful setting filled with colorful monsters to collect and the latter in a world ravaged by nuclear warfare and teeming with mutants, monsters, and other survivors trying to kill the player at every turn.

In a way, the legendary Pokemon Mewtwo can be seen as a connective tissue between Pokemon and Fallout, as the Psychic feline represents human science’s influence on the natural world - just like the nuclear weapons that created the wasteland that players roam in the Fallout games. At the very least, Mewtwo would likely relish the chance to battle the various monsters and enemies lurking in said wasteland, and Kaminari_Taimei’s impressive crossover artwork ensures it would look stylish while doing so.
