The world was introduced to Pokemon on February 27, 1996, with the release of Pokemon Red and Green in Japan for the Game Boy. This kicked off a worldwide phenomenon that is still strong to this day, with near-countless Pokemon video games, movies, shows, and more for fans to enjoy.

Since Pokemon's 20th anniversary in 2016, February 27 has become known as Pokemon Day, where big announcements about the franchise's future are made to the public. Some Pokemon Day events are bigger than others, but it's always an exciting time for fans of the Pokemon franchise.

It's highly likely that the Pokemon Day festivities will coincide with a Pokemon Presents stream, as has been tradition in recent years, but that has not been confirmed yet either.

Pokemon Day 2024 Prediction

Again, it must be stressed that nothing official has actually been announced for Pokemon Day 2024. However, it's possible the event will feature new Pokemon game announcements, and it's also quite likely it will feature some updates on existing Pokemon games. One distinct possibility is that Pokemon Day 2024 will be used to unveil a new Mythical Pokemon to Pokemon fans, as has been teased by a reputable leaker.

Leakers have teased that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will be getting a new Mythical Pokemon, and that said Mythical will be featured in an upcoming Pokemon anime movie. Assuming that's true, it's easy to see how the rumored Pokemon and the associated movie could be announced on Pokemon Day. Such a reveal would potentially excite not only Pokemon Scarlet and Violet fans, but fans of the Pokemon anime series as well, and so could potentially generate a ton of buzz.

As for what else might be shown during Pokemon Day 2024, that's anyone's guess. Pokemon fans can take a look back at previous Pokemon Day celebrations and get an idea of what they might be able to expect from the probable show on February 27.

Biggest Pokemon Day Announcements (2016 - 2023)

  • Generation 1 Pokemon games released for 3DS Virtual Console (2016)
  • Pokemon-Themed New Nintendo 3DS (2016)
  • Pokemon Sun and Moon (2016)
  • Pokemon Sword and Shield (2019)
  • New Mythical Pokemon Zarude (2020)
  • Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (2021)

  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (2022)
  • Hidden Treasure of Area Zero (2023)

Pokemon Day 2016 was the first proper Pokemon Day celebration, highlighting the franchise's 20th anniversary. While Pokemon Day 2016 was celebrated in a variety of exciting ways, it's safe to say that many hardcore gamers were most interested in the Virtual Console releases of Pokemon Red, Pokemon Blue, and Pokemon Yellow and the reveal of Generation 7 games Pokemon Sun and Moon.

Pokemon Day 2016 set a high bar that the following two years weren't really able to match. While The Pokemon Company still found clever ways to celebrate the Pokemon franchise in 2017 and 2018, those particular Pokemon Day events didn't feature any big announcements for the franchise. However, things ramped up in 2019 with a Nintendo Direct event that saw Pokemon Sword and Shield revealed for the Nintendo Switch - the Generation 8 Pokemon games and the first brand-new, mainline releases for Nintendo's home console/handheld hybrid.

2020 was more low-key for its Pokemon Day celebrations, with events hosted in games like Pokemon GO, Pokemon Masters, and Pokemon Sword and Shield. The day was light on major announcements beyond the reveal of Mythical Pokemon Zarude for Pokemon Sword and Shield. With rumblings of a new Mythical Pokemon potentially coming to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, it's possible Pokemon Day 2024 will take a page out of the 2020 event's playbook.

2021 marked the 25th anniversary of the Pokemon franchise, and it also played host to one of the most exciting Pokemon Days to date. On that day, Pokemon fans were treated to news on existing and upcoming Pokemon games, like New Pokemon Snap, along with the reveal of Generation 4 remakes Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and the announcement of Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Pokemon Legends: Arceus took the franchise in bold new directions, experimenting with a more open-ended game design that saw it become one of the highest-rated new Pokemon games in years.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus announced the Daybreak Update on Pokemon Day 2022, though the headline that day was the unveiling of Generation 9 Pokemon games Pokemon Scarlet and Violet along with their starter Pokemon.

Last year's Pokemon Day wasn't nearly as exciting as 2021 or 2022, but it did feature the reveal of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. It will be interesting to see if Pokemon Day 2024 is more in line with 2021 and 2022. Pokemon fans will have to wait for February 27 to roll around to find out.
