A Pokemon player shared an original artwork picturing a dark form of Voltorb, the Electric-type Pokemon introduced in the first generation of games. Artists often imagine new versions of their favorite pocket monsters, usually taking inspiration from new mechanics introduced in Pokemon games such as the Paradox forms from Scarlet and Violet, but this dark form for Voltorb is a brand-new concept.

Voltorb is one of the most recognizable Pokemon, with its spherical look that resembles a Poke Ball. Voltorb has been in all Pokemon games since the first generation and the release of Pokemon Red and Blue in 1998. Its evolution, Electrode, looks just like Voltorb but featuring reversed colors, smaller eyes, and a large mouth. In 2022, Pokemon Legends: Arceus brought a new look to Voltorb by introducing its Hisuian version, trading its usual smooth appearance for a wooden texture and giving it a new Electric/Grass dual-type.

A Reddit user known as PhantomLink2782 shared an original concept of Voltorb, giving it a dark form and new abilities. Unlike the classic and Hisuian versions of Voltorb, this creature has a more sinister look, with a texture resembling steel with dark vertical lines on a gray background. Its eyes are glowing purple, while its shiny version has light blue eyes. This version of Voltorb evolves in a dark form of Electrode when exposed to a Moon Stone. This new design gives Voltorb and its evolution Electrode an Electric/Dark dual-type, with three default abilities: Static, Soundproof, and Pressure.

According to PhantomLink2782, the artist was inspired by the mysterious Dark Ball to create this dark form for Voltorb and Electrode. These Pokemon are the results of being corrupted by the dark energies from this Poke Ball, turning them into more aggressive and threatening creatures. The Dark Ball is a variation from the Poke Ball introduced in the Pokemon anime series, allowing a trainer to catch a Pokemon that belongs to someone else. This special Poke Ball turns any captured Pokemon into an evil creature, losing its freedom, and blindly obeying its master.

Voltorb has been inspiring Pokemon fans for years, with artists regularly sharing their redesign of this iconic Pokemon on social media. Some create new versions of Voltorb based on different Poke Ball types, while others imagine the Paradox form of this popular Pokemon. With the release of the new Pokemon anime, fans can hope to see new Poke Balls that will inspire artists to create more versions of Voltorb and Electrode.
