Highlights

  • Normal/Flying is the most common dual type combination in Pokemon, appearing in 27 different Pokemon, mainly as birds.
  • Grass/Poison is another commonly used combination, with 14 Pokemon having this type pairing, although it has been less prevalent in recent generations.
  • Flying/Bug is another frequently used combination, also appearing in 14 Pokemon, but Game Freak has been using it less in recent generations, opting for more unique bug typings.

Pokemon has utilized more than a hundred different combinations of its 18 types for its various creatures throughout the decades. Not every type combination is treated equally, though. Some are only pulled out once in a blue moon while others appear in nearly every new generation, from Pokemon Red and Blue to Scarlet and Violet.

Since this is all about different combinations of the various types in Pokemon, obviously Pokemon that have only a single type won't be counted here. Pure Water-type Pokemon are the most saturated throughout the series as a whole, but the following information is solely covering Pokemon with two types.

Normal/Flying

Normal/Flying is the uncontested champion of oversaturated type combinations. It's been used so often that on a list of the most common typings for Pokemon, it's actually the only dual typing that appears in the top ten. 27 different Pokemon have Normal/Flying as their type combo, from the first regional bird Pokemon Pidgey all the way up until Squawkabilly in Gen 9.

For some reason, Game Freak decided that Normal/Flying should be the standard for any and all bird Pokemon, and there wasn't even a Pokemon in existence that was pure Flying-type until Tornadus in Pokemon Black and White. Since Tornadus, only two other pure Flying types have been added in Rookidee and Corvisquire; meanwhile, the new regional birds continue to claim the classic Normal/Flying.

Grass/Poison

This is the only type combo of the three most commonly used that doesn't have Flying in it somehow, and on top of being one of the most common type combos, it's also the first type combo ever listed in the Pokedex for Bulbasaur. 14 different Pokemon claim Grass/Poison, although when looking at a list of those Pokemon it's very apparent that Game Freak mostly favored the combo back in the Pokemon Red and Blue days.

Of the 14 Grass/Poison Pokemon available, more than half of them originated in Kanto. On top of that, the most recent Grass/Poison Pokemon added were Foongus and Amoonguss back in Generation 5, meaning this type combination has been all but forgotten in the 3D age. That's not necessarily a bad thing, considering the fact that Grass/Poison is still in the top three most-used combinations of all time even after being absent from new additions for more than a decade. Still, the decision behind using this combo for a whopping nine of the original 151 Pokemon is confusing.

Flying/Bug

Flying/Bug ties with Grass/Poison for being one of the most common type combinations with 14 different Pokemon throughout the series claiming it. It definitely seems as though Game Freak has been trying to lean out of using this combo in recent generations considering Flying/Bug hasn't made an appearance since Vivillon in Pokemon X and Y.

Gens 7 through 9 still obviously have their regional bug Pokemon, but they all switch up the more traditional regional bug typing format, which is definitely good for making each new generation feel more fresh. Now if fans could just get a Bug/Dragon Pokemon, the series would be one step closer to using every type combination.

Interesting Bonus: Psychic/Fairy

Psychic/Fairy types are in the top 10 most utilized type combos in Pokemon, which is interesting mostly because it's a very recent title only taken retrospectively. Many Pokemon were re-typed with the introduction of Fairy in Generation 6, making Pokemon like Mr. Mime and Gardevoir Psychic/Fairy where previously they were just pure Psychic types. This is the only combo in the top 10 that achieved this because of re-typings, along with it being a common type combo in new generations with Pokemon like Hatterene, Scream Tail, and Galaran Rapidash.
