In the original Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl, Munchlax was an extremely rare Pokemon that could only be found in Honey Trees. This mechanic returns to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but there's also a new method of obtaining the gluttonous Pokemon.

Trainers who want to have the tanky Normal-type Snorlax on their team need to evolve a Munchlax first. Since the introduction of the Grand Underground, players are able to catch rare Pokemon that were difficult to get in the original Diamond and Pearl. This includes Munchlax. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, there are two different ways to add a Munchlax to the team/PC.

Honey and Honey Trees

The original and arguably more frustrating method of getting Munchlax is by using Honey Trees. This was the only way to catch Munchlax in Diamond/Pearl.

Upon arriving in Floaroma Town, trainers will need to defend someone from Team Galactic grunts. Once defeated, they will receive the Honey item as a reward and be able to use it on Honey Trees.

Unlike regular trees, these are golden in color and players can interact with them so long as they have Honey in the inventory. Slather some honey on the bark and come back after 6 hours. Honey will stay on the tree for 24 hours, but Pokemon will leave if the tree is not checked before then. Unfortunately, this means trainers will need to reapply honey.

Getting Munchlax from Honey Trees can seem like a tedious process. For one, Munchlax only spawns on specific Honey Trees. Back in Diamond/Pearl, this was determined by a Trainer's ID. So, out of all 21 Honey Trees in Sinnoh, only a select few could spawn Munchlax, who has a Rare chance of appearing.

Unless trainers aren't in any rush to catch Munchlax or want a Snorlax, they should use Honey Trees to catch other Honey Tree-exclusive Pokemon (such as Cherubi or Aipom) instead.

Grand Underground

The second option is to go to the Grassland Cave Hideaway in the Grand Underground. Here's how to unlock this biome:

  • First, defeat Crasher Wake of the Pastoria City Gym.
  • Next, go to the Safari Zone in Pastoria City. If this isn't the first time visiting the Safari Zone, then players can speak to the boy with the green hair in the Safari Zone's lobby and get HM Defog immediately. If this is the first time visiting, go into the Safari Zone, then immediately exit. As long as the player has been into the Safari Zone at least once, they will be able to get Defog from the green-haired NPC.
  • Now, use Fly to get to Sandgem Town and use the Explorer Kit.
  • The Grassland Cave Hideaway is indicated by a green square on the map. It is located to the south.
  • Enter the Grassland Cave Hideaway and look for Munchlax. Exit and reenter until it spawns.

Munchlax's catch rate isn't too high, so use stronger Poke Balls such as Ultra Balls to catch it. Additionally, trainers can try using Love Balls or, depending on their party's level, Nest Balls and Level Balls.

If players want more than one Munchlax, they can revisit the biodome, or they can evolve Munchlax into Snorlax (high friendship). To get a Munchlax Egg, have Snorlax hold onto a Full Incense and then put it in the Daycare with a compatible Pokemon (such as Ditto).

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are available now on Nintendo Switch.
