Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl are very loyal remakes to their original counterparts, Pokemon Diamond & Pokemon Pearl. In fact, it's impossible to transfer any Pokemon from Unova (Gen 5) and beyond to Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl (BDSP). Despite this drawback, BDSP supplies several quality of life changes that were desperately needed for the Gen 4 mainline Pokemon games.

In Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, there is a recurring item called a Lucky Egg that doubles experience gain. Although friendship perks have been a part of the Pokemon series since Gen 6, having an EXP-boosting item is never a bad thing. The Lucky Egg is a unique item that can be held by a Pokemon. As such, it's an item that trainers will want to get their hands on as soon as the egg's location becomes available.

Updated on December 1st, 2023 by Renri Seong: The Sinnoh/Gen 4 remakes of the beloved Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum games were an anticipated game since the remakes of Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. Unfortunately, many fans were displeased with the final product, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, due to the limitation of Pokemon (Gen 1 - Gen 4 only) and criticizing the lack of features such as Mega Evolution or Dynamaxing. Complaints aside, there were several qualities of life features added to BDSP, and one of these was the Grand Underground, a map exclusive to the Sinnoh remakes. The Grand Underground houses a variety of Pokemon and unique items, such as the EXP-enhancing Lucky Egg. The following guide has been updated to include precise instructions, how to get more than one Lucky Egg, and debunking the 'myths' surrounding it.

Here's everything Pokemon GO trainers will want to know about catching Swablu and its evolution, Altaria.

Prerequisites for Getting the Lucky Egg

Explorer Kit, Relic Badge, HM Strength, and Route 216

Pokemon-Brilliant-Diamond-Pokemon-Shining-Pearl-Lucky-Egg-1

In order to get the Lucky Egg, players need to do several things:

  1. Receive the Explorer Kit.
  2. Get HM Strength at the Lost Tower on Route 209.
  3. Defeat the Gym Leader of Hearthome City (Fantina) to obtain the Relic Badge (gym badge #5).
  4. * Have access to Route 216.

* The Lucky Egg is locked to the Northwestern Zone of the Grand Underground. If players already have access to Snowpoint City or even Fullmoon Island, they can just fly and use the Explorer Kit there instead .

Explorer's Kit

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond Shining Pearl Eterna City Pokecentre

To get the Explorer's Kit, trainers need to go to Eternia City, and enter the house right next to the Pokemon Center. Speak to the old man to get the kit as well as a tutorial on how to use the Grand Underground features. Using the Explorer Kit in different areas of Sinnoh can drop players into areas with unique hideaways. Hideaways are home to Pokemon that were originally obtainable in Pokemon Platinum, such as Ralts and Togepi. Some hideaways are even home to items, and one of them happens to have the Lucky Egg.

Getting HM Strength

HM Strength can be obtained from one of the old ladies at the summit of the Lost Tower on Route 209. Speak to one to get the HM, and the other will give a Cleanse Tag, which lowers the chance of getting wild encounters.

Players will also need to be able to use HM Strength outside of battle .

Once players have the HM Strength, they'll need to battle Fantina of Hearthome City. When players first arrived in Hearthome City, they probably couldn't battle Fantina due to her team's level being in the mid-30s. Once they obtain the Veilstone City and Pastoria Gym Badges, they'll be on even ground with the Ghost-type gym leader. After obtaining the Relic Badge, HM Strength can finally be used to push around heavy boulders.

How to Get to Route 216

Unfortunately, the Lucky Egg is locked in the hideaway in the far upper left corner of the Grand Underground, and if players haven't been to Route 216/the northern section of Sinnoh, they won't be able to get it. With HM Strength, the Explorer Kit, and the Relic Badge, they should be able to reach Route 216 without much of an issue.

  1. Fly to Celestic Town, and head left to Route 211.
  2. At the end of Route 211, trainers can enter Mount Coronet.
  3. Once in Mount Coronet, head north and use Strength to move the boulders in the way.
  4. Take the stairs down and use Defog (optional).
  5. Keep going straight, then take the stairs that go up.
  6. On the next floor, go straight then left to exit onto Route 216.

Icy Cave in Northwestern Zone of Grand Underground

Now that players can reach Route 216, they can use the Explorer Kit to enter the Northwestern Zone in the Grand Underground. If they're starting from Route 216 and not Snowpoint City or Lake Acuity, they'll need to do some walking to reach the northwestern-most hideaway. Press down on R-stick to pull up the Grand Underground Map, and use that to navigate to the Icy Cave hideaway in the top-left of the Northwestern Zone.

Inside the Icy Cave, head west and look near the bank. There should be a Poke Ball item that contains the Lucky Egg.

How to Use the Lucky Egg

Give It to a Pokemon

The Lucky Egg will be placed in the Other Items pouch in the Bag. Scroll down to it, and tap A-button to select it. Choose Give to "equip" it to a Pokemon, and that's all there is to it. As long as Pokemon are holding a Lucky Egg, they'll receive 150% experience rather than 100% experience upon winning a battle.

How to Get Another Lucky Egg

Buy a Second Lucky Egg for 77BP

pokemon brilliant diamond shining pearl battle tower lucky egg prize

In Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, Lucky Eggs can be bought for 77BP at the Battle Park/Battle Tower in the Battle Zone. They are not held by wild Pokemon. Originally, Lucky Eggs could be farmed off of wild Chansey (5% chance), but since there are no wild Chansey in BDSP, this method is null.

The Battle Zone region is unlocked after defeating the Elite Four and speaking to the sailor in Snowpoint City. It's also recommended to get the National Dex from Professor Rowan to explore the Battle Zone in its entirety.

Head towards the Battle Park on the map. If this is the first time visiting, players will be stopped by one of the receptionists, who will give them a Point Card. Unlike regular PokeMarts, the Battle Tower does not use regular currency. Instead, trainers will need to battle competitively in the Battle Tower to farm more Battle Points (BP). If players want to exchange points for items, they'll want to go to the left counter at the Exchange Service Corner.

The difference between Battle Tower matches and regular matches is that all Pokemon are scaled to a set level. Trainers can also choose up to three Pokemon in single battle, or they can choose four Pokemon if they're double battling. They will then need to battle wave after wave of trainers. Each time they successfully defeat a trainer, they will receive Battle Points.

Trainers in the Battle Tower are much more challenging than any trainer that players have faced on their BDSP journey. For one, all their Pokemon are EV-trained and equipped with items such as Berries. They also have movesets that give them plenty of coverage.

One thing to keep in mind about the Battle Tower is that Friendship Perks do not work and Pokemon do not gain Exp. Therefore, do not go into the Battle Tower expecting a Pokemon to "tough it out" when taking a hit that guarantees a 1HKO.

Does the Lucky Egg Stack Experience?

Can It Stack with the Exp. Share?

pokemon brilliant diamond shining pearl lucky egg exp stack

With a permanent Exp. Share, players may be wondering: Does the lead Pokemon increase Exp for the party if its holding a Lucky Egg? The short answer is: No, the Lucky Egg does not stack with Exp. Share. Only the lead Pokemon will receive more Exp. So, if there's a Pokemon that trainers want to level up quickly, then they'll want to have that particular Pokemon holding the Lucky Egg for farming more Experience.
