Fire-type Pokemon were always rare in the original Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. Now, with the inclusion of the Grand Underground, players can get more than just Chimchar and Ponyta in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl. Because of this, it's a good idea to give Fire-type Pokemon an item to help boost their Fire-type moves.

While Fire-type Pokemon are a bit more common in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the Charcoal item is not. There are three ways to get Charcoal, but two methods aren't available until after the Elite Four, and the other method is luck-based and version-exclusive.

Route 227

Players will not be able to get Charcoal until they have access to Stark Mountain. This only happens once they've received the National Pokedex and have beaten the Elite Four.

  1. Go to Snowpoint City and speak to the sailor to get to the Resort Area.
  2. From the Resort Area, go north to Route 229 and head northwest to Route 228, which is a mountainous, desert region.
  3. Use the bike and go across the third narrow bridge and follow the path. Players will need to use HM Rock Smash to get rid of a boulder that's in the way.
  4. Climb down and navigate through the mountain to reach the building/gate linking Route 228 and Route 226.
  5. Once on Route 226, go north to reach Route 227. Use the bike to jump over the small edges to reach a Ranger trainer.
  6. From the Ranger trainer, jump down one ledge and go left towards the tall grass. Go around the area, past a house with a green roof, and go up the stairs.
  7. Cross the narrow bridge, go left down a ledge, and use HM Rock Climb.
  8. Go to the right (use HM Surf or walk through the grass) and there will be a Poke Ball item. Grab it to get the Charcoal.

Catch Torkoal or Vulpix

Use the Pokeradar to find Torkoal on Route 227, Stark Mountain, Stark Mountain Entrance/Interior. It has a 5% chance of carrying Charcoal and, unlike Vulpix or Ninetales, can be caught in both Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

For those who have Shining Pearl, Vulpix can be found in the Grand Underground after receiving the National Dex. Like Torkoal, it has a 5% chance of carrying Charcoal.

Vulpix can be found in the following habitats:

  • Typhlo Cavern
  • Volcanic Cave
  • Sandsear Cave
  • Spacious Cave

If Vulpix isn't there, exit and then walk back in to try and respawn it.

When catching either Torkoal or Vulpix, bring a Pokemon with the Frisk ability to check and see if they're even carrying Charcoal.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl are available now on Nintendo Switch.
