As loyal remakes to Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl bring back Pokemon Contests and Poffin cooking. In order to win Pokemon Super Contests, players need to raise their Pokemon's conditions, which can be accomplished by feeding them Poffins.
Similar to the Pokeblocks in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and their remakes (Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire), Poffins come in five different flavors in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. The ingredients used to cook Poffins are berries. Depending on the flavor of the berry, this will either generate a Dry, Sweet, Spicy, Sour, or Bitter Poffin. By feeding the right flavor of Poffin to a Pokemon, their score will increase in the Visual Competition of Pokemon Contests.
Getting the Poffin Case
Poffin making will not be readily available at the start of Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. In fact, before players can even start making Poffins, they will need to get the Key Item, the Poffin Case.
Once players have received the second gym badge from Gardenia, they will be directed to Hearthome City. Players will need to find the Pokemon Fan Club, which is a building with an orange/red roof to the right of Hearthome's Pokemart. Go inside and speak to the Chairman and he will talk about Poffins before handing over a Poffin Case.
Cooking Poffins
With the Poffin Case in hand, backtrack to the Pokemart and enter the building to the left. This is the Poffin House and it is where players can cook Poffins. Speak to the woman wearing an apron to start cooking.
Similar to cooking curry in Pokemon Sword/Shield, players will be prompted to select berries. If cooking Poffins alone, players will be allowed to cook up to four berries at a time. Once selected, use the left joystick to stir the batter in the direction of the arrows.
Poffin Cooking is split into 3 stages. At stage 1, the batter is easy to stir and easy to spill. In stage 2, the batter will be a little darker and be harder to stir and spill. By stage 3, the mixture requires faster stirring but is now impossible to spill.
When complete, players will receive a Poffin. The higher the Poffin's level, the better it will raise the condition. This can be accomplished by mixing different berries of the same flavor. Adding four of the same type of berries will yield a Foul Poffin. By using at least one unique berry among the three other berries, players will get a Poffin that will raise the condition.
Poffin Flavors, Sheen, and Tips
Below is the list of Poffin flavors, conditions, and berries:
Flavor | Condition | Berries |
---|---|---|
Bitter | Smart | Rawst, Lum, Nabnab, Aguav, Haban, Jaboca |
Spicy | Cool | Cheri, Leppa, Figy, Pinap, Tanga, Enigma |
Sweet | Cute | Pecah, Persim, Mago, Bluk, Kasib, Custap |

Mild | Mulitple | Any other berry, ex: Magost, Tomata, Cornn, Nomel |
Furthermore, a Poffin's condition growth will be influenced by a Pokemon's nature. If a Pokemon with an Adamant Nature is fed a Dry flavored Poffin, the effect of the Poffin will be multiplied by 0.9 instead of 1.1. Pokemon with a Nature that doesn't have flavor preferences will receive a regular boost in their conditions when fed a Poffin of any flavor.

Each time a Pokemon consumes a Poffin, their Sheen increases. The Sheen is affected by the smoothness of a Poffin. Pokemon will start out with 0 Sheen and have a cap of 255. Like using vitamins to raise EVs, once Pokemon hit the Sheen Cap, they will no longer be able to raise their condition.
Players can get an estimate of a Pokemon's Sheen level by the number of sparkles around their Pokemon. This can be viewed by going to the Pokemon's Stats page.
- 0 Sparkles: 0-21 Sheen
- 1 Sparkle: 22-42 Sheen
- 2 Sparkles: 43-63 Sheen
- 3 Sparkles: 64-85 Sheen
- 4 Sparkles: 86-106 Sheen

One Pokemon that evolves through maxing out a condition is Feebas. Once Feebas' Beauty condition is maxed out, it needs to level up once in battle to evolve into Milotic. Because Pokemon Nature influences condition growth, it's best to have a Feebas with a Nature that doesn't have an aversion to Dry-flavored Poffins. Since disliked Poffins only have an increase of 0.9, it will take Feebas much longer for its Beauty to grow.
To avoid running out of berries, players should get into the habit of planting berries. This will save them from running out to farm-specific berries once they've started cooking Poffins.
Finally, when cooking Poffins, know that each Poffin flavor has a weakness. Meaning if players want to cook a batch of Sweet-flavored Poffins, they should avoid mixingbitter-flavored berries with sweet-flavored berries. Mixing berries with conflicting flavors will decrease a Poffin's strength. A Poffin made with mixed berries will have sprinkles. Its primary flavor will be the base color of the Poffin, while its secondary flavor is indicated by the Poffin's sprinkles. Consuming a Poffin with two different flavors will increase two conditions instead of one.
