In the updated Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl, players will need special moves in order to progress through the story. These moves are called HMs or TMs and are different than they used to be in the old Diamond and Pearl. They can be acquired by chatting with NPCs inside of the game.

HMs or TMs in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Hidden moves in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl can now be used through the Poketch or the Pokemon Watch. This means that players don't have to waste a move space for any Pokemon in a player's team. This means that players can grab all the HMs or TMs whenever they like without worrying about space in their Pokemon's move inventory.

There are eight total hidden moves in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. All of these moves unlock different parts of the games or the Grand Underground. TMs or HMs only show up in one specific location or only from one specific NPC.

  • Rock Smack - Talk to the hiker in the west of Oreburgh City.
  • Cut - Cynthia in Eterna City will give this HM to the player on their first visit.
  • Strength - The strength HM or TM move can be found on the top floor of the Lost Tower on Route 209.
  • Fly - Check Team Galactic’s warehouse in Veilstone City to unlock fast travel in Diamond and Pearl.
  • Defog - Look for Great Marsh Safari Zone's gate; right inside the gate is a green-haired NPC that has Defog.
  • Surf - In Celestic City after defeating Team Galactic, players need to look for Cynthia's grandmother to find this move.
  • Rock Climb - The HM Rock Climb in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl can only be found on Route 217 in the snow by the hiker's house.
  • Waterfall - In Sunyshore City after defeating Volkner, players can nab this TM from Jasmine.

Using HMs and TMs in Diamond and Pearl

In order to use the HMs, players have to defeat the gym associated with the move first. After that, just press the R button on Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con. Select the move that needs to be used, like Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl's Defog on any foggy areas. This will unlock new places in the overworld and also unlock a whole bunch of new Pokemon that players can nab in the Grand Underground as well.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl are available for Nintendo Switch.
