Fire-type Pokemon are often among fan-favorites for several reasons. As one of the types for Starter Pokemon, plenty of trainers will have bonded with a Fire-type as their very first Pokemon, but many others have a massive cool factor.

Fire can be a great type offensively, but it's rare for a pure fire-type to get a look in when it comes to competitive battles. Like most Pokemon, it needs a secondary type to back it up and make it stronger. Fire Pokemon have a lot of options in this regard, as they have paired up with almost every other type over the years.

8 Ice

Galarian Darmanitan in Zen Mode

A Fire/Ice type is about as contradictory a combination as can be got in Pokemon, but the creative minds at Game Freak made it work. Darmanitan has been an oft-overlook Pokemon for a long time, but Sword & Shield gave it a brand new Galarian Form.

The regular version of this Pokemon is pure Ice, but when it switches to Zen Mode, it gets the fire-type re-added. These extra steps mean it will never see much use on the competitive scene, but casual players could find a niche for it.

7 Psychic

Delphox In The Pokemon Anime

Psychic is traditionally one of the game's stronger types. While it's no longer as overpowered as it was in Generation 1, there are still plenty of Psychic Pokemon who should be feared. Pairing them up with Fire is a blessing and a curse.

On the downside, they'll have 5 weaknesses, which is a bit on the dangerous side. However, there are a couple of upsides. For one thing, it gets 7 resistances, which is the most any combination a Fire-type can get. On top of that, Psychic-types have massive movepools full of both offensive, defensive, and supportive moves.

6 Ground

Pokemon TCG Camerupt Card Art

While Ground is not among the best, they're certainly one of the most intimidating types out there. Camerupt is a frightening-looking Pokemon, and then there's Primal Groudon, which is a whole other beast.

While Primal Groudon dominated the competitive scene for many years, it's because it had such an overwhelming amount of things going for it, not its typing. Fire/Ground types enjoy the luxury of just 2 weaknesses. However, one of them is a 4x weakness, meaning any Water attack will likely be a one-shot. If players can keep them away from that danger, though, they could stick around in battle for a long time.

5 Flying

Pokemon Charizard flying

Fire/Flying types have some fantastic potential, but players will need to be careful how they use them. They were boxed out of competition for a while due to Stealth Rock halving their health upon entry, but the meta has evolved to the point where entry hazards are not the huge threat they once were.

With 6 resistances and an immunity to Ground-types, opposing trainers will have to work hard to hit these Pokemon very hard. Additionally, Flying is often a much speedier type than average, meaning Fire/Flying Pokemon will have the advantage of hitting first more often than not.

4 Dark

Pokemon Houndoom in battle

When it comes to enhancing the coolness of Fire-types, Dark is the way to go. Pokemon like Houndoom have fantastic designs that fans are bound to be drawn to. Luckily for them, this type-combination has plenty to offer.

What makes this such a great combination is that they make up for what each one can't do. Dark-types don't traditionally have very offensive movepools, but Fire-types can go all-out. Similarly, Fire-types often lack defensive capability, but Dark can make up for it with 6 resistances and immunity to Psychic.

3 Fighting

Pokemon Pearl

Although it eventually became a meme that there were too many Fire/Fighting-type Starter Pokemon, they were a welcome addition at first. Fire is an inherently aggressive type and pairing it with Fighting only enhances that. Fire/Fighting Pokemon have access to some great moves like Close Combat, and their strong Attack stats make Fire moves like Flare Blitz extremely powerful.

It does alright against other types. It has 4 weaknesses, which isn't great, but 6 resistances, which makes up for it somewhat. One of these, Bug, is a 4x resistance, meaning those attacks will barely scratch it.

2 Dragon

Reshiram In The Pokemon Anime

A type that has always been considered powerful, Dragon and Fire feel like they'd be a common pairing; dragons traditionally breath fire, after all. However, there are only two Fire/Dragon-type Pokemon in existence. One is Alola's Turnantator, and the other is one of Unova's box-art Legendary Pokemon, Reshiram.

They enjoy a host of powerful attacks and access to Dragon Dance for buffing purposes. They have just 3 weaknesses and 5 resistances. It is one of the few type combinations to have more than one 4x resistance, too, as Fire and Electric attacks bounce right off them.

1 Water

Gen 6 Legendary Pokemon Volcanion

A unique type of combination, the traditional enemies of Fire and Water working together is as powerful as it sounds. The only Pokemon to currently have this type is Mythical Pokemon Volcanion, which is themed around steam; a very creative way to mesh these opposing types.

Like Fire/Dragon types, Volcanion has 3 weaknesses and 5 resistances, but this time there are even more 4x resistances. Thanks to Water being a tremendous defensive type, Volcanion isn't threatened by much. Fire, Ice, and Steel attacks will barely do any damage, and even with the few types, it is weak to, strong Defense and Special Defense stats keep it safe.
