PlayStation is giving away five free PSN avatars to celebrate the ongoing PS Plus Season of Play, which began on December 5 and runs through January 5, 2024. The Season of Play will offer a free online multiplayer weekend, allowing players who aren’t yet subscribed to PlayStation Plus to experience one of the perks of membership, and there will also be esports tournaments to participate in, points to earn on PlayStation Stars, discounts on PlayStation Gear, and of course, some free PlayStation avatars.
One of the best parts about the PlayStation 4 UI were the themes that players could use to personalize their console experience. Even three years later, many gamers are still hoping that the PS5 will eventually get themes, though Sony has never really commented on the subject. In the meantime, a very small callback to that longed-for customization option are PSN avatars, which allow players to at least change one aspect of their gamer profile.

Since relaunching the subscription service in June 2022, Sony has added a host of games per month to PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium.
To celebrate the Season of Play, five unique PSN avatars have been made available, and they can be claimed for free until January 5. Each of them sports the PlayStation Plus logo in the background and a stylized image of a recognizable character from five popular games: Ezio from Assassin’s Creed, Kim Kitsuragi from Disco Elysium, Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima, and Montagne from Rainbow Six Siege. A PlayStation Plus membership is not required to redeem the codes for the free avatars.

Along with the free avatars and the online multiplayer weekend, which runs from December 9-10, interested shoppers can use promo code SEASONOFPLAY15 to get a 15% discount from the PlayStation Gear online store. There will also be tournaments from December 12-17, so gamers can test their skills in EA Sports FC 24, NBA 2K24, Madden NFL 24, and MLB the Show 23, and more. Top performers will have a chance to win a PlayStation Plus Premium membership, and everybody who participates in the tournament will be entered into a drawing to win a PS5 Digital Edition console.
The Season of Play is also offering a chance to earn 50 extra PlayStation Stars points simply by playing any of the three free PS Plus games for December 2023: LEGO 2K Drive, Powerwash Simulator, and Sable. And everybody, not just tournament participants, can enter to win a PS5 console and a year subscription to PlayStation Plus Premium by answering five questions on the PS Plus website. Overall, Sony is giving gamers plenty of reasons to immerse themselves in the PlayStation ecosystem for the month of December.
