Following the huge wave of recent departures, it's been pointed out that May has historically been a rough month for PlayStation Plus. Sony's PlayStation Plus subscription service adds new games for subscribers to check out across all three tiers on a monthly basis. PS Plus Essential subscribers get free months to play, PS Plus Extra subscribers get those games plus a rotating selection of PS4 and PS5 titles, and finally, PS Plus Premium subscribers have all that plus access to retro games.

While new games are added to the PS Plus tiers every month, games are removed from the tiers every month as well. Usually there are more games added to PS Plus than there are games leaving, but May 2024 was an exception, with a whopping 35 games leaving PS Plus Extra and Premium in May. The departures included some heavy hitters, like classic Final Fantasy games and Horizon Zero Dawn, and they were just the tip of the iceberg. As it turns out, May 2024 wasn't the only time May was rough for PS Plus subscribers.
