Freebies have become a staple of the modern gaming industry. First popularized by Xbox's Game with Gold program that saw subscribers get a free game or two a month, freebies have quickly become a must-have for all big publishers and platforms. The Epic Games Store gives away free titles every month, Xbox has maintained its Game with Gold service, and PlayStation has its PS Plus Essentials tier. Freebies are now just a necessary part of the industry, and each platform is trying to outdo the other in order to encourage players to come to their platform, and PlayStation's PS Plus Collection was one of the greatest offers ever given.

Originally designed to sway customers into buying a PlayStation 5 on launch, the PS Plus Collection gave players a plethora of critically-acclaimed video games completely for free. These titles ranged from first-party exclusives to third-party icons, with hundreds of dollars worth of value being given to the player for free. It's a truly great collection of titles, but unfortunately, as of May 9 2023, PS5 users will no longer be able to claim these games.

PlayStation 5 Users Should Grab the PlayStation Plus Collection While They Can

The PlayStation Plus Collection currently offers a total of 19 stellar titles, all of which can be claimed for free. Once claimed, these games can be played forever just as long as the user is still subscribed to PlayStation Plus. Thankfully, although Sony is shutting down the PS Plus Collection on May 9, those who have claimed titles before that date will still be able to play them after the shut-down, as long as they still have an active PS Plus subscription. And every PS Plus subscriber on PS5 should make sure they claim every single game in the collection before May 9.

The PS Plus Collection doesn't have a single dud in its library. Of the 10 PlayStation first-party exclusives included in the collection, all 10 are critically-acclaimed games, with the likes of God of War 2018, Uncharted 4, The Last of Us Remastered, Bloodborne, and Until Dawn all appearing. The worst of the bunch is probably Detroit: Become Human or The Last Guardian, and that's saying something as both of these titles are still worthwhile experiences, especially when they're free.

On the third-party side of things, PS Plus subscribers on PS5 can currently grab a total of nine games, again, all of which are phenomenal titles. Batman: Arkham Knight, Fallout 4, Monster Hunter: World, Resident Evil 7, and Mortal Kombat X are all stand-out games, while some consider Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 - Zombies Chronicles Edition to be one of the greatest multiplayer games ever made. This list used to be even better, with Persona 5 being free to claim up until May 2022.

Every single game in the PlayStation Plus Collection is worth claiming. Even if subscribers have already played those titles before, or they have little to no interest in some, they should still go through and make sure each one is claimed before May 9. Gamers never know when they'll have the urge to replay that classic game or try out a brand-new genre for the first time, and it's likely that they'll want to play one of those in the PS Plus Collection's list. After all, all of these games are completely free, and claiming them now ensures that they remain free for the foreseeable future.
