The PlayStation 5 is capable of taking gamers to places that were not possible before. Boasting a powerful SSD, and a great performance of new graphical capabilities. Yet, there is one thing that will always remain the same: the power of a plot twist.

Plot twists are a great narrative trope that exists in every form of storytelling. They’re present in quite a few PlayStation titles, and they can either enhance or ruin a PlayStation game, but more often than not, the experience of the player is enriched by the great narrative twists.

10 Colt Has A Daughter – Deathloop

Deathloop is a first-person action game developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Studios as a title for the PlayStation 5. The story involves a man named Colt, desperate to discover his identity, and why he keeps reliving the same day, over and over, all whilst getting hunted by Julianna, the strange woman with the skillset of a talented assassin.

As players progress through Deathloop, there are many twists and turns in the narrative. The deepest one isn’t only that Colt was here voluntarily, but that Juliana, the very woman Colt had been arguing with, and killing every day, was his daughter.

9 Sam The Bridge Baby – Death Stranding

As players embark on a mission to reconnect with America, many fans of Hideo Kojima might be expecting some form of a twist. Kojima is known in the gaming industry for his innovation, and brilliant stories and the success of the Metal Gear series is a testament to that. Death Stranding does not disappoint with its surprises.

The most notable surprise comes toward the end of the game, in which the player discovers that the memories they are seeing from the BB unit, Lou, are not this baby’s memories of Cliff, but Sam’s. It turns out Sam was the original BB, and his revival triggered the Death Stranding event.

8 Eldritch Horrors – Bloodborne

Upon first glance, Bloodborne appears to follow a similar feat to Dark Souls. Both in the sense of gameplay, and the desire to hunt ungodly creatures. In Bloodborne, players are tasked with hunting beasts, and putting a stop to the scourge, as to end the night. However, not all is as it first appears, as Eldritch Horrors begin to seep through the game, and cosmic mysteries unravel.

It turns out, that the entire plot of Bloodborne, and the hardest ending is in part to the Eldritch beings known as the Great Ones. There’s deep lore behind the game, one that many still try to decipher to this day, but it’s a great surprise when fans just expected to hunt beasts, and instead fought cosmic horrors.

7 Gray Fox’s Identity – Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid is filled with memorable characters, in part thanks to Hideo Kojima’s genius. The PlayStation-exclusive title had a character called Gray Fox, a mysterious cyborg ninja assassin that taunted Snake, and stalked Shadow Moses in his mission.

Later, Snake recalls who Gray Fox is behind that cyborg mask. Frank Jaeger, Snake’s comrade-in-arms and friend from the original Metal Gear. Fox betrayed Snake for Big Boss in the Outer Heaven Uprising and fought him during the Zanzibar Land Disturbance. Solid Snake had assumed his friend forever lost after their first battle, until their reunion in Metal Gear Solid.

6 Lord Shimura’s Honour – Ghost of Tsushima

After the epic climax and the defeat of the Mongolian invasion, Jin reunites with his uncle, Lord Shimura at the family estate. Jin Sakai abandoned the principles of a samurai to become the first ninja and utilized tactics unfamiliar to the Mongols so that Japan could succeed, and Tsushima would be freed of the invasion, thus birthing the Ghost of Tsushima.

Lord Shimura meets Jin, to tell him that his sacrifice was in vain and that the Sakai clan has been disbanded. They talk and reconnect. The closest bond to father and son. That is until Shimura reveals he has been ordered to kill Jin. Their dual is poetic, and beautifully tragic, with an outcome that is decided by the player, and will haunt their days no matter what.

5 Joel Saves Ellie – The Last Of Us

The entire journey of The Last of Us has the gruff Joel, traveling across America to take the young teenager Ellie to the Fireflies. The Fireflies are a group of freedom fighters, that resist the fascist remnants of a pre-outbreak government. Ellie is immune to the fungal virus that has placed humanity on the brink of extinction.

It isn’t until Joel and Ellie reach their destination, that Joel realizes that Ellie is the daughter that he lost all those years ago. He saves her, but at the cost of killing every last Firefly at the hospital, including the doctors that were trying to save humanity, all because he could not accept that the surgery would need to kill her. A sacrifice that was not his to make, but as a parent, he could not go through with.

4 The Tinkerer Is Phin – Spider-Man: Miles Morales

With the famed Spider-Man, Peter Parker on vacation, New York City is left with the new Spidey, the protege to Peter Parker: Miles Morales. In Spider-Man: Miles Morales, players experience great power, and equal parts responsibility. Miles struggles to balance his life as a hero, in and out of costume as he helps the citizens of New York City.

His recently resurfaced friend, Phin, turns out to be the very villain that he is fighting against. The Tinkerer has been supplying a new NYC gang with equipment and weapons to battle him, and he had no idea up until that point.

3 Cole Is Kessler – inFAMOUS

After Cole MacGrath receives a mysterious package, in the Historic District of Empire City, the package exploded, and devastated the city in destruction, killing thousands. The result of this event, triggered Cole’s powers, giving him Electrokinesis. Colt harnesses his newfound powers, and tries to bring order to a reckless city, all whilst battling the powerful and mysterious Kessler.

It turns out, Kessler is Cole. The inFAMOUS villain revealed all to Cole, showing his nemesis: The Beast, a threat to all life. Kessler fled with his family as the world suffered. Using his most dangerous power, he went back in time to make sure Cole caused the blast to speed up the process of his powers.

2 Aloy Is A Clone – Horizon: Zero Dawn

Raised as an exile from birth, Aloy spend her years wondering just why she was banished from a society she had never done anything to. Horizon: Zero Dawn answers the questions of the player, and Aloy, about just how important she is as a character.

Aloy is a genetic clone of the 21st-century engineer, Dr. Elisabet Sobeck. She was created by GAIA, the AI of Project Zero Dawn, in the hopes that Sobeck’s clone would one day be able to defeat HADES, a rogue AI hellbent on the destruction of artificial life.

1 Loki Is Kratos’ Son – God of War (2018)

It’s no secret that Loki gained a rather large following since his first appearance in Marvel Studios’ Thor. Since then, the character has been more prevalent in Norse mythology depictions, one being 2018’s God of War. The game is a tale of a rageful father, and a distant son, as they come together to scatter the ashes of a mother and a wife.

At the end of the game, Kratos and Atreus are closer than before and discover a tapestry that tells the story of Atreus. It’s revealed that Atreus’ mother wanted to call him Loki, the famed God of mischief from the Norse pantheon. The full extent of Atreus’ fate is yet to be revealed, but if it’s anything like his father’s, Zeus and Thor are in big trouble.
