Highlights

  • PlayStation fans may be disappointed, as the May event could be a State of Play, not a full showcase as initially rumored.
  • The exact date for Sony's next presentation is uncertain, leaving gamers in the dark about upcoming first-party game reveals. Though a May event has been heavily suggested, the month is almost over, so it would have to happen any day now.
  • Despite the potential lack of a big showcase, Sony may still have exciting announcements for fans at a State of Play.

Credible insider NateTheHate has suggested that the heavily-rumored PlayStation event scheduled for May 2024 could be a State of Play and not a full-on showcase. If this is the case, then Sony's next showing might end up being a disappointment for PlayStation fans that are expecting a massive blow-out of first-party game reveals from the many studios under the platform holder.

With summer 2024 fast approaching, the gaming showcase season is about to begin. Geoff Keighley's annual Summer Game Fest is set for June 7, with 55 companies already confirmed to take part in the event. Meanwhile, Microsoft revealed back in April that it would be hosting an Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, June 9. Even Nintendo announced that it'd have a Direct of its own sometime in June, with the company president Shuntaro Furukawa revealing the information in an unexpected Twitter post. Out of the platform holders that have announced showcases so far, only one of them is missing, and that's PlayStation. With no official confirmation in sight, fans have been wondering when exactly the next PlayStation Showcase will be. Unfortunately, one insider might have some bad news on this matter.

Upcoming PlayStation Console Exclusive Could Have Its Big Reveal Within the Next 15 Days

A reliable industry insider reports that one of PlayStation's upcoming console exclusives is likely to receive a gameplay reveal by early June.

Responding to a fan asking about PlayStation's rumored showcase in May, the leaker NateTheHate shared his thoughts in a post on Twitter, alleging that "Sony's May event is still on track." However, he added that he expects it "to be a State of Play early next week" instead of a traditional summer showcase. The claims of some type of PlayStation event in May fall in line with recent reports made by fellow insider Jeff Grubb, who stated on several occasions that Sony's next presentation would happen within this month. No rumor up to this point, however, had suggested that it wouldn't be a showcase.

Given the fact that little is officially known about PlayStation's first-party roadmap, the potential lack of a proper showcase may come as a surprise to many fans of the brand. After all, gamers have still been left in the dark on what developers like Naughty Dog, Bluepoint, Bend Studio, Media Molecule, Housemarque, and Sucker Punch are making. Although the previous State of Play in January 2024 was well-received, if the next PlayStation event is nothing more than that and isn't a showcase, then fans may not get updates on what the majority of Sony's studios are currently working on, which will probably disappoint many.

Despite The Potential Lack of a Showcase, Sony May Still Have Announcements That Could Excite Fans

The last time Sony went a whole year without a single showcase was in 2022, when they hosted a fairly modest State of Play in June instead. Since it appears that Sony may do something similar this year, then fans should probably keep their expectations in check, at least for whatever this potential May event ends up being. Nonetheless, there may still be new first-party PlayStation game reveals over the summer, like the Astro Bot and LEGO Horizon titles that are rumored to be in development.
