The PlayStation 2 is the highest-selling home console of all time, and one need only look at its massive library of incredible titles to understand why this is the case. The PlayStation was also a brilliant success in its own right, but it was the resounding brilliance of the PS2's launch followed up by constant support from first-party and third-party titles that have cemented the illustrious reputation of this glorious console.

That being said, one has to admit that there are a ton of brilliant games in the PlayStation 2's library that have become obsolete, mainly due to a lack of any remake or remaster that would introduce a new generation of gamers to these titles. Keeping this in mind, here are ten excellent PlayStation 2 titles that are in dire need of a remake.

10 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

The re-imagining of Los Santos and its surrounding areas in Grand Theft Auto V showcases a ton of promise for how incredible and awe-inspiring a remake of San Andreas would look like.

The idea of roaming around the massive areas in and around Los Santos, Las Venturas, and San Fierro is bound to be quite alluring for many fans, with the story of CJ taking on a whole new life in itself if it's remade with the same level of quality and panache present in Rockstar's latest titles.

9 Resident Evil 4

Menendez resident evil 4 boss

Resident Evil 4 was a landmark title for the franchise, with the game leaning more towards an action-oriented approach as players controlled Leon Kennedy in one of the most iconic third-person shooters of all time.

It goes without saying that players would obviously want this classic to be given the respect it deserves, and — given the recent string of excellent remakes by Capcom — one can only wait and see whether this becomes a reality or not.

8 Final Fantasy X

Final Fantasy X

One of the greatest JRPGs of all time that wows gamers to this day, the sheer number of times Final Fantasy X has been re-released is nothing short of exhaustive. That being said, the game is yet to receive the benefit of a full-on remake — something that this brilliant title very much deserves.

Given the massive critical and commercial success of Final Fantasy VII Remake, one can trust Square Enix with rebuilding Final Fantasy X from the ground up and allowing a new generation of gamers to experience the brilliance of this title firsthand.

7 Bully

Bully

Perhaps one of the most underappreciated titles in Rockstar's history, Bully is an imaginative take on school life as players step into the shoes of a truant by the name of Jimmy Hopkins as they try and overthrow the hierarchy of the boarding school they're enrolled in to become the top dog while simultaneously taking revenge for a betrayal from a "friend".

It's easily one of the more unique and entertaining games in Rockstar's library, and one can only hope that this game is remade in their modern engine so that both new and old players can enjoy the magic of this title once again.

6 ÅŒkami

Amaterasu from Okami

There's no questioning the fact that ÅŒkami is easily one of the most unique titles on the PlayStation 2, featuring a brilliant art style, a unique gameplay loop, intriguing characters, and a story that perfectly fits in with the setting of this game.

ÅŒkami is one of the most underappreciated titles in the PlayStation's library, and a remake of this title will deservingly bring a ton of attention towards a title that deserves way more love and adoration than it has received since release.

5 Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill 2

Considered to be one of the greatest horror games of all time, Silent Hill 2 is a masterful title that combines all the aspects of survival horror along with an incredible plot that will keep players hooked up to the very end.

Given how much of a rut this franchise is stuck in right now — in no small part due to Konami's mishandling of the series — a remake of the lauded second game would definitely be the best way to make this series relevant once again.

4 Ico

Ico

The restructuring and downsizing of the legendary Sony Japan Studio is something that didn't sit well with fans, especially since said company featured the members of Team Ico, known mostly for their work on Shadow of the Colossus.

However, while this legendary title ended up getting the remake it rightfully deserved, the same can't be said for the studio's first game — Ico. A charming title that turned the much-reviled escort system into a genuinely interesting game mechanic, Ico is an easy choice while selecting a game from the PS2's library that deserves a remake.

3 Katamari Damacy

Katamari Damacy

Perhaps the weirdest game on this list, the odd yet funny shenanigans that players can get into while playing Katamari Damacy has cemented this title as a cult classic.

While this game is probably the most niche title on this list, a remake of the first game in the series might finally allow a large swath of players to try this game for themselves and realize why Katamari Damacy is considered to be an underappreciated gem for many.

2 Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Sons of Liberty

The Metal Gear Solid series is easily one of the most iconic video game franchises of all time, with the games released on the PlayStation 2 being truly excellent in their own right.

The bait-and-switch pulled off by the second game in the series, Sons of Liberty, is quite iconic... although perhaps for the wrong reasons. Regardless, a remake of this classic title will allow many fans of the series — who failed to get into the games during this console generation — to experience the magic of the Metal Gear Solid series once again.

1 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Snake Eater

However, there's no questioning the fact that the greatest Metal Gear Solid game on the PS2 has to be Snake Eater, a legendary title that has gone down the annals of gaming history mainly due to the bevy of iconic moments present in this game.

Playing through a remake of this brilliant title is bound to be a blast... although, knowing Konami's history with the creator of the series, Hideo Kojima, perhaps it's better that this remake is never greenlit by the company — at least, not in its current state.
