PlanetSide 2 recently launched a campaign to break the world record for most players in an FPS battle, a record the game has proudly held since 2015. The attempt was wildly successful, with PlanetSide 2 players beating the record on two servers simultaneously as thousands of gamers showed up to support the MMO's endeavor.

PlanetSide 2 is the sequel to Sony Online Entertainment's PlanetSide, the original MMOFPS which ran for over 13 years. Where most shooters take place on confined maps with relatively small teams and time limits, PlanetSide 2 instead involves multiple massive continents where thousands of players fight over territory on land, in the air, and most recently, in the water. Players can take on a variety of roles from supportive medics to fighter pilots, tank drivers, transporters, stealthy saboteurs, engineers, and more. Over the years, a steady pace of major updates for PlanetSide 2 has introduced new vehicles, weapons, continents, a mercenary faction, and even player-operated base building.

As part of the game's 10th-anniversary celebration, Daybreak Games sought to unite its players in breaking PlanetSide 2's Guinness World Record for most players in an online FPS battle, which involved 1,158 players. This newest attempt was a resounding success, with the record being broken on the Emerald server with over 1,228 players on the Amerish continent and once more with over 1,241 players on the Indar continent. The record was initially planned to be attempted on the game's Public Test Server before technical difficulties were encountered, and the community rapidly readjusted to the new plan. Participants will be receiving special titles to commemorate the occasion.

Coinciding with the world record attempt is a new round of big changes coming to PlanetSide 2 thanks to the 10th Anniversary Update. A new capture-the-flag-style facility capture mode is being introduced, called Capture The Conduit, which should majorly shake up the fights for certain facilities. A ton of visual upgrades are also included in the update, from improved anti-aliasing methods to water reflections, revamped explosions, improved textures, and more detailed screen space reflections. As expected, the update is also making a round of balance changes affecting a wide range of items and roles.

Despite its age, the fact that PlanetSide 2 is still able to break long-held records speaks to the game's loyal player base. Since it is a free-to-play game that offers a unique experience and massive scale, PlanetSide 2 is worth a try for gamers looking for an innovative first-person shooter.

Planetside 2 is free-to-play on PC and PS4.
