In the wake of massive layoffs at Microsoft that saw the company eliminate 10,000 jobs across numerous divisions, Xbox head Phil Spencer stated in a recent interview that 343 Industries remains “critically important” to both Xbox and the Halo franchise. In the days following the layoffs at Microsoft, rumors had circulated that 343 Industries was removed from active development on Halo titles, leading some gamers to worry about the franchise's long-term future.

Created by Microsoft in 2007 to head up the Halo franchise following original developer Bungie’s split from the company, 343 Industries’ entries in the popular shooter series have often been a source of contention among franchise fans. While its work on titles like Halo 4 and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary was warmly received by many gamers, the ongoing technical issues that plagued both Halo: The Master Chief Collection and 2021’s Halo Infinite left some gamers asking whether 343 was the right studio to helm such an iconic franchise. Following rumors that it would no longer be heading up the IP, the studio recently took to Twitter to clarify that 343 is still developing Halo games and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

In a wide-ranging interview with IGN discussing changes at Microsoft and Xbox and the company’s plans moving forward following recent layoffs, Xbox head Phil Spencer reaffirmed the importance of 343 Industries to the Halo franchise. Putting his view on the matter in no uncertain terms, Spencer stated that “Halo will remain critically important to what Xbox is doing, and 343 is critically important to the success of Halo.” When asked about rumors of support studios being brought in to help the developer with future Halo titles Spencer stated that, while support studios may be involved, “the heart and soul of Halo is with 343.”

Despite the words of praise from Xbox head Spencer for the studio that has overseen the Halo franchise for over 15 years, some former 343 Industries employees have painted a less than rosy picture of the working relationship between the two companies in recent days. In a series of Twitter posts following the layoffs at 343, several former Halo Infinite developers criticized Microsoft for both the layoffs and reportedly providing ineffective leadership during the shooter’s beleaguered development. While those developers are no longer with 343, their statements indicate that there might have been more friction between the developer and Microsoft than gamers were aware of.

Whatever the future holds for Halo, it seems evident that Phil Spencer wants 343 Industries to be a part of it. And while gamers wait to see what happens next with the storied franchise, at least they can pass the time by taking part in Halo Infinite’s Joint Fire Event for the next few days.

Halo Infinite is available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
