The filmmaking duo of Christopher Miller and Phil Lord has been enjoying a bit of a renaissance over the past several years, and it's not difficult to see why. They've knocked projects out of the park in the animated medium as well as the live-action space, including The Afterparty and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, leaving some fans to wonder whether there's anything they can't do. Well, it's hard to answer that question. But one thing's for sure: they aren't stopping anytime soon.

After the undeniable success of The Afterparty on Apple TV Plus, fans quickly began wondering if it would get a follow-up. The thing is, even though The Afterparty season 2 was only announced relatively recently, it turns out that it was quietly greenlit even before the first season aired. Not a bad first impression from a series that started life as a movie concept a whole decade ago. A murder mystery where each suspect's story is told in a different style and genre certainly seems tailor-made for TV, and the series' reception proved that. Now, season 2 looks to keep that same magic alive while also bringing something new to the table.

While on Deadline's Crew Call podcast, Lord and Miller discussed the show's origins as well as where it will go from here. While many likely already knew that The Afterparty was originally conceived by Miller as a film, Apple TV Plus' eagerness for a second season may be a lesser-known fact. That probably explains why the season 2 premise was pretty quickly revealed, since the writers had already been hard at work for a while by the time the season finale aired. Granted, a murder mystery series like The Afterparty already has plenty of possibilities for new stories, especially since it's mainly following Tiffany Haddish's Hercule Poirot-esque Detective Danner as she apparently solves a new murder every season.

Unlike season 1, which took place at the afterparty of a high school reunion, season 2 of The Afterparty will be set at a wedding with an all-new cast of suspects. According to Lord and Miller, each episode will focus on the perspective of 2 characters rather than the single-character episodes of season 1. At the moment, the only other detail they're willing to share is that the murder victim this time around is very much unlike Dave Franco's Xavier from last season. Luckily, The Afterparty wasn't the only topic of conversation.

The duo also talked about their forays into Sony's side of Marvel, reassuring fans that the live-action Spider-Verse series Silk is still on its way and that some real news can be expected soon. As for Across the Spider-Verse, the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, they defended the decision to delay the follow-up. While they admitted that they might have been able to make the original release date, they decided to err on the side of caution and give themselves enough time to make it at an even higher quality level.

The duo has a lot on their plate going forward, even including an adaptation of Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary, which follows up his other beloved novel-turned-film The Martian. But they seem happy to be so busy. If Lord and Miller are happy, then so are the fans, and it looks like there's going to be a lot of happiness going around very soon.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set to release on June 2nd, 2023.
