On December 14, the developer of Phasmophobia, Kinetic Games, released the Tempest update, and among other changes it includes an update to the crucifix item. The crucifix has always been one of the most useful items players could bring along during ghost hunts, and this update has made it even easier to use.

While other ghost-hunting items in Phasmophobia are good for detecting which room ghosts are hiding in and which type of ghost is haunting a building, the crucifix is an item that can protect the hunter. A crucifix placed on the ground will stop a haunt before it begins, so long as the haunt would start within three meters of the item. The crucifix only works two times before dissolving, but this can give ghost hunters valuable time they can use to find more clues and complete optional objectives. In fact, stopping a haunt with a crucifix is often its own optional objective.

Before the new Tempest update, players would have to throw their crucifixes without knowing exactly where they'd land. Now, however, they can place their crucifix and see exactly where it will sit. On top of that, players can see the three-meter radius that will stop a haunt. This means they can see whether the crucifix is close enough to cover a corner of the room and whether they're wasting some of the radius by placing it too close to a wall.

Of course, crucifix changes aren't the only new thing to come with the Tempest update. As the name suggests, the highlight of the update is the revamped weather system, which has reintroduced fog, added sunrise weather, and optimized the rain and snow effects. It also includes a rebalancing of the new Custom difficulty system and the way it rewards players. Several ghost types have also received buffs, changes, and in a few cases, some completely new mechanics.

Many players will likely enjoy this update to the crucifix, since it removes a lot of the guesswork that went into finding the best spot to place them before a haunt can begin. However, other players may be upset with this change since the large white circle it creates is less immersive. After all, it's unlikely that a real ghost hunter would know exactly how far three meters is, especially in a stressful situation. Still, there's no doubt that giving this information to players will let them use the crucifix much more effectively.

Phasmophobia is available now on PC.
