It’s been quite a while since Peter Dinklage rose to prominence thanks to his role as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, and though he has mostly distanced himself as any kind of spokesperson for people with dwarfism, the actor couldn’t hold back his feelings on the upcoming remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Last year Disney released further announcements regarding the film’s cast, with the most notable choices being Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) as The Evil Queen and Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), the latter being of mixed Colombian and Polish descent, as the main character. The decision to choose an actor of Latin descent was praised by some, however, in Dinklage’s opinion that fails to address the seven little people that share a cave and the movie’s title with Snow White.
Dinklage’s comments surfaced during an appearance in the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, where he touched upon several topics including his latest movie Cyrano and the irony of a film like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs being called progressive. The 52-year-old actor said “You're progressive in one way, but then you're still making that f***ing backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f*** are you doing, man?” and yet insisted he doesn’t want the movie to be canceled, offend anyone, or anything like that, just that it doesn’t make sense to him fearing the movie could feature stereotypes about his condition.
In Dinklage’s case, he was born with achondroplasia, the most common form of dwarfism, that leaves him standing at 4’5 (1.35m) but at the same time turned into one of the world’s most recognizable actors. During the interview, the actor self-reflected on his own platform saying “Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soap box? I guess I'm not loud enough. I don't know which studio that is, but they were so proud of it,” while still leaving room for a Snow White remake that could feature a more “f***ed up, cool, or progressive spin on it?”.
The version of Snow White commonly known today is the one Disney made popular thanks to 1937 animated film, nevertheless, many people might also be familiar with Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s gruesome Fairy Tales, which already underwent tons of changes during the 1800s. It’s still not known what direction Disney will take with this new remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, though now it wouldn’t be entirely surprising to see Dinklage’s comments affect it, given he is by far one of the most famous people on the planet with dwarfism.
Currently, Dinklage’s performance in Cyrano has gained him tons of praise, as he stars in a movie version of his wife Erica Schmidt’s musical screenplay (itself adapted from the 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac), where a man lends his seductive charm for someone else to lure the woman he loves. The story, which could mimic Tyrion’s feelings for Daenerys Targaryen, might also end up bringing the actor the same awards and recognition his Game of Thrones part did before the finale.
