Maxing out your Social Links in Persona 3 Reload is incredibly important for any playthrough. A Social Link allows Personas to gain extra experience upon Fusion, and reaching a Social Link's Rank 10 allows you to fuse Ultimate Personas. You'll unlock your first Social Link fairly early in your playthrough.
Unfortunately for fans of the female protagonist's route in Persona 3 Portable, Junpei Iori does not represent the Magician Social Link in Persona 3 Reload. Instead, you'll have Kenji Tomochika, who was the Magician Social Link for the original Persona 3/FES and the male protagonist route in Persona 3 Portable.

How to Unlock the Magician Social Link
What Days is Kenji Available?
You will automatically unlock Kenji's Social Link on 4/22. From then on, you can find Kenji in Your Classroom at Gekkoukan High. He is available on Tuesday, Thursdays, and Fridays. Just like any other student Social Link, you can't spend time with Kenji during holidays or the week before exams.
