Pentiment takes place in Tassing, a fictional Bavarian town in the 16th century. Here, Andreas is spending his time at the Kiersau Abbey as he finishes his masterpiece. Players will get to explore the town and the large Abbey as they try to solve a murder mystery that occurs a while later.

In the initial act, Andreas is staying at the Gertners as no inn is yet available. One of the first tasks players need to finish is asking the Abbey to give Andreas’ wage early so that he can help the Gertners pay their taxes. However, as strict rule and arrangement exist between the Abbey and the townsfolk, this task may not be as easy as it sounds. Here’s what players need to do to get the payment early in the Gertners’ Taxes task in Pentiment.

How To Get The Payment Early In Pentiment

There are two ways Andreas can get the payment early for The Gertners’ Taxes task in Pentiment:

  1. Ask Father Gernot (only if Andreas has Theology trait)
  2. Ask Brother Mathieu

Father Gernot can be found in places like Abbot’s House, Large Garden, and Refectory, while Brother Mathieu can be found in the Church or Refectory.

After getting the payment, Andreas has to choose between giving the money to Clara directly or leaving the coins on the table. Either option is fine as long as players talk to Clara the next day.

How To Convince Father Gernot

To get the early payment from Father Gernot, approach him and talk to him politely. Don’t ask for the payment when he just met Lorenz at the start of the act.

Any of the first three options are fine to choose. In all cases, Gernot will say that the tax arrangement between the Abbey and the Gertners is not Andreas’ business.

Here, there will be a Theology-exclusive option. The other two options will lead to nowhere, so asking Father Gernot is not possible if Andreas didn’t study Theology.

After choosing the Theology option, Father Gernot will offer to give Andreas’ payment early. Agree to the arrangement, then find Brother Mathieu to collect the wage.

How To Convince Brother Mathieu

Alternatively, asking Brother Mathieu is both easier and faster. Approach Brother Mathieu and ask him for a favor. Speak to the monk nicely to not offend him.

Afterward, choose, “Is that why father abbot has increased the taxes on the Gertners?

Lying is not necessary here as Brother Mathieu will agree to give Andreas his payment early if he admits to wanting to help the Gertners.

As Mathieu handles the Church’s treasury, players will finish the task as soon as Mathieu agrees to give the wage, unlike the Father Gernot route where Andreas has to find Brother Mathieu after convincing the abbot.
