John Cena's quirky Peacemaker returns in just a few days in a new standalone series on HBO Max, and the streamer has decided to introduce his team of misfits to the world. In a newly released trailer, the focus isn’t on the titular character, but instead on his trusted sidekicks, who seem to be shooting people after they’re already dead.

HBO Max's Peacemaker is the spin-off series from the 2021 film The Suicide Squad. After the film was released, Cena's Peacemaker became a fan-favorite character, and fans have been looking forward to seeing more of his antics on the small screen since the series was announced. While Peacemaker was a part of the Task Force X in the film, he will now be forming his own crew, which is full of interesting characters.

The newly released Peacemaker promo introduces fans to Jennifer Holland's Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee's John Economos, Chukwudi Iwuji's Clemson Murn, Freddie Stroma's Adrian Chase, a.k.a. Vigilante, and Danielle Brooks' Leota Adebayo. Each character has their own strength and quirks, and brings a unique personality to the table. While fans will get to watch Cena's Peacemaker fight for peace in the world, the new trailer promises help from his brilliant team members.

The character missing in the trailer is Peacemaker's father Auggie Smith, portrayed by Robert Patrick. He will also be playing an important role in the series, but seems to have missed the opportunity to be a part of Peacemaker's closest team members. Cena’s Peacemaker has been a part of a team before, in The Suicide Squad, and that didn’t end too well for him.

After betraying the members, he was almost killed at the hands of Idris Elba's Bloodsport. But, the post-credits scene confirmed that he had in fact survived his wounds and was last seen recovering at a hospital. It isn’t clear whether the series will pick up immediately after the events of the film, as director James Gunn has been quite cryptic about the timeline.

In The Suicide Squad's post-credits scene, Holland's Harcourt and Agee's Economos, both Amanda Waller's subordinates, are seen recruiting Peacemaker for another task. An exclusive Peacemaker scene was released late last year that puts Cena's character at the same hospital. Dressed in a hospital gown, Peacemaker was seen arguing with a janitor about whether he is in fact a superhero or not.

Peacemaker premieres on HBO Max on January 13, 2022.
