The team behind the upcoming multiplayer heist shooter Payday 3 has released a roadmap for the game's first year, with four planned DLC expansions listed alongside additional content. This is the latest in a series of announcements about Payday 3 ahead of the game's anticipated launch on September 21.

Not all revelations about Payday 3 have been well received by fans of the franchise. The previous announcement that Payday 3 will be always online even for solo players was a disappointment to many, given the myriad issues and limitations associated with live-service video games. Members of the robust modding community that has grown up around Payday 2 will struggle to practice their craft on the sequel, for example, given the challenges in modding an always-online game.

Despite some fan reservations, the team behind Payday 3 clearly has big plans for the title, as indicated by a content roadmap recently released on Twitter. This announcement lists four major DLC expansions planned for Payday 3, to be released over the course of a year following the game's launch. So far, there is no confirmed information about the content each DLC pack will contain, beyond their names: Syntax Error, Boys in Blue, The Land of the Free, and Fear and Greed. This roadmap seems to line up with previously announced Payday 3 content plans.

In addition to the major DLCs, the roadmap also promises a variety of additional content to be released during the same time frame. These offerings include seasonal events, new playable characters, skills and weapons, cosmetic items, and more. Fans of the franchise will recognize similarities to the types of content that has been released for Payday 2 over the years, and will no doubt be eager to see how the content in Payday 3 improves on its predecessor.

Those who just can't wait to try this new title can join the Payday 3 open beta, which is running once again from September 8-11. However, this beta will be based on an older build than the one that is going to release later this month, so fans will just have to bide their time until launch to see what Payday 3 really has to offer. Given the deep and enduring passion so many players have for Payday 2, this sequel will have to do a lot of work to outshine its predecessor.

Payday 3 releases on September 21 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
