Starbreeze Studios unveiled more information about the single-player mode of Payday 3, but what the developer announced will not please some of the players as an online connection is required in all game modes. While the Payday series is mainly known for its multiplayer mode, Payday 3 also will feature an option for those who would like to play on their own and team up with computer-generated criminals.

Payday 3 is the anticipated sequel to 2013’s Payday 2 and will feature the popular heisters from the previous game. Payday 3 will take place in a modern version of New York, with new heists and robberies to conduct throughout the city. Since the days of Payday 2, a lot has changed in the world, and the sequel wants to tap into some of the new technologies introduced in the past decade, such as cryptocurrencies, and heists linked to mass surveillance and even the Dark Web. While Starbreeze Studios hasn’t yet revealed many details regarding the new heists and robberies, players can expect new improved challenges in Payday 3.

In a recent livestream, Starbreeze Studios’ global brand director Almir Listo confirmed that even if Payday 3 features both multiplayer and solo game modes, players will require an online connection no matter if they play with others or not. This means that players won’t be able to access Payday 3 offline and will have to turn on their internet connection even if they wish to play on their own. Listo explained that this decision was made because Payday 3 supports cross-progression and crossplay, so an internet connection is required to save players’ data and transfer it from one platform to another.

Upon learning that Payday 3 requires an online connection even to play solo, players took to the comment section of the livestream to express their frustration. Many players wish they would be able to play Payday 3 even when no internet connection is available, especially those who only play on one platform and do not care much about multiplayer or cross-progression features. Several comments expressed their author’s disappointment in this decision, stating they would no longer purchase Payday 3 due to this lack of offline mode and may turn to other Grand Theft Auto-like heist games.

Those who do not mind having to be online even to play single-player in Payday 3 will discover many new features introduced with this new installment in the Payday series. On top of a brand new modern setting to explore, Starbreeze Studios improved various aspects of Payday’s gameplay, from weapons and armor to the game’s scaling over the different difficulty modes.

Payday 3 will launch on September 21 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
