Path of Exile has just announced its upcoming Sentinel expansion which promises to bring a huge amount of new content into the game. Fans of Path of Exile can expect all-new gameplay systems, quality of life changes, and a new challenge league. The lengthy list of changes and additions means players have a lot to look forward to when the update goes live.

Path of Exile has had an impressive run since its debut in 2013, the Diablo-style action RPG developed by Grinding Gear Games has grown increasingly popular thanks to its generous free-to-play model, free form approach to character builds, and addicting progression systems. Boasting a Very Positive rating with over 180,000 reviews, the game has remained one of Steam's most popular free titles. Roughly once a year since launch, it has received a number of expansions and "mini-expansions" that have introduced new content, systems, and features always with the goal of keeping the game feeling fresh.

The latest expansion for Path of Exile, Sentinels, is among the most comprehensive of these updates. The key feature, the eponymous Sentinels, are ancient constructs that follow players around and empower their enemies. The increase in risk brings an increase in reward, meaning players will want to seek out increasingly difficult Sentinels for the best possible rewards.

Depleted Sentinels can be combined in order to assemble a new Sentinel that carries over the properties of its predecessors, giving players a unique way of altering the challenges they face. Recombinators, a new currency item, also allow this feature to be applied to equipment. Using a Recombinator on two of the same class of equipment will result in a new piece of equipment with some of the properties of both. This feature should make the gearing process even more interesting as players attempt to generate powerful combinations of properties. The Sentinel league can be played in Standard, Hardcore, and Solo Self-Found mode.

The Bloodlines and Nemesis systems have been removed from the game, with their modifiers incorporated into the revamped monster modifier system. Additionally, over a dozen new Atlas Keystone Passive Skills have been added, with more to be announced at a later date. For endgame players, several extremely difficult "Uber" variations of Pinnacle Boss fights have been added and are designed to be tackled only by extremely powerful characters. Controller support has finally left Beta, meaning Path of Exile is now considered controller friendly, with support added for DualShock 4 Controllers, and the game will also be fully playable on the Steam Deck. Along with these highlights are a long list of bug fixes, quality of life tweaks, and additional features.

The Sentinels expansion is slated to release for PC on May 13th and on Playstation and Xbox later on May 18th. As usual with the release of a new challenge league, Path of Exile players will most likely be busy formulating powerful character builds as they progress through the new league alongside their Sentinel companions.

Path of Exile is available on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox One.
